I have a knocking coming from the centre of the dash,I read on the forum about a bolt that had come loose attached to a bar under the bonnet,I cannot now find the thread with the photos and location of the said culprit....can u help

Noise travels too well on these aluminium cars. Check it is not the windscreen wiper tapping the wind screen nor the bonnet rattling in the rear mounts.

I think I remember vaguely the thread you read and the bar is not under the bonnet but under the dash and is secured by a bolt that has to be accessed under the bonnet. It's more a strip of metal and you can see it in the picture, courtesy of Sarge, the shiny strip extending to the bottom of the windscreen in line with the steering wheel. The strip is secured by a bolt at the windscreen end and was loose and the strip vibrated making an annoying tapping noise.

I cannot recall anyone else reporting this problem so it is extremely rare and I would concentrate on more common causes.

I have given up trying to pinpoint noises, they always end up never where I thought!

I had something like this, an annoying rattle, from somewhere in the middle of the dash. I had pulled out the air vent/cup holders/stereo looking for it.
Mentioned it to the mechanic when I took the car in for it’s MOT.
Turns out that it wasn’t under the dash at all. There are two rectangular guides that the bonnet slides into before you lock it in place, at the top, near the windscreen. They come lose and rattle as they get older as they aren’t very well fastened. Because they both rattle, it sounds like the noise comes from the middle of the dash.
Some double sided tape underneath them and the sound was gone.

Thanks to you both ,I’ll check on these, also it was suggested maybe the wiper arm banging on screen, when I first looked at the wiper arms there was a small rubber nipple attached to the arm it has now disappeared, but I’ll do a thorough check

Found the problem ,the wiper arm is banging on the windscreen,, a slight mod to the wiper blade attachment lifting the arm away from the screen, thankyou all for your help

Glad you found the problem, did think either wiper or bonnet the source of the noise. Thanks for informing us the problem was solved.

The rubber nipple is there to try to protect the screen in case the wiper arm is dropped on to the screen when say changing the wiper blade etc. It does nothing in normal use and most wiper arm have long ago lost the rubber nipple
I can do you a refurbished wiper arm which will stop the problem once and for all
PM me if interested

Paul, thanks for the offer, if the wiper arm deteriorates, I may get an arm from you, thanks again..john

How do you recognize by looking at the wiper arm that it is the culprit?
I have sometimes weird noises from the front too, but especially my wiper draws a lot of water back on the screen in the middle where it's attached when returning from the side.
Is this issue connected?

The wind screen wiper problem is normally wear in the pins and springs that allow the arms to flex but still pressed against the screen. As these wear the arm droops and the base of the springs end up touching the screen either constantly or when the arm is vibrated during driving or operation. This is heard as a tapping noise. If allowed to continue there is a good chance the screen will be scratched or even worse cracked by these piont that are contacting the screen. Another thing that can cause the arm to contact the screen is automatic car washes as they can flatten the arm against the screen as the roller brush hits them.

This picture shows an example of the rub / scratches the drooped arm makes. You can clearly see it arcing up from the base of the screen behind the mount locations. Note someone has modified the fixing in this picture to stop the droop.

Wow. OK.
Thanks!
I think the wiper blade is more compressed in that area, but there is no contact to the screen (yet). When you said springs, I was thinking of the two springs located parallel to the arms at the base of the wiper
