What is it with the 1.6 Fsi at below 3000 response is awful on dealers advice have been continuosly running on Optimax but at 83p per litre defeats the object of an economical to run car concept been to dealers three times with it Ist time told it was new tight engine (Audi Reading) Audi Guildford past two occasions said its pretty normal cones with the FSi technology lean atomisation of the fuel etc
read loads of reveiws on A2 before purchase can't believe nobody picked up on its lack of oomph , once your up in the higher revs its very energetic but low down and on standard 95 octane its scaringly sluggish at junctions , roundabouts etc.

Our car's performance seems to vary depending on its mood.

With the recent very hot weather it felt very sluggish and lacked torque pulling away and between gears. Not sure if this was the climate working flat out or the FSI control playing up.

Now its cooler again it seems to work OK. If it comes back again I'll get the delaer to give it a once over.

In comparison to our previous 1.4 petrol the FSI has a lot more guts at low revs, e.g. from 2k onwards (most of the time !)

On teh way back from a trip to Devon on soem 'B roads I was amzaed to be able to get the average economoy over 10+ mile into the low 60s using some careful driving techniques. Whole trip was 50+. On the way down with lots of queus it got 42.

As I mentioned somewhere else in the forum...

Mine does it (Nearly stalls etc) if I have been driving in a gentle mode and then try to pull out fast - the engine seems to sense how it is being driven and 'tunes' itself accordingly (New BMWs do it with Transmissions as well)

The FSI engine is a little like a turbo engine - there is very little off the bottom but when the revs are up it starts to pull nice.

Some people have a problem revving their engines out (The rev limiter is there for a reason - you arent gonna kill it before it cuts in so use it)
So... use loads of revs (and a little clutch work) when you are pulling out in to traffic etc and there arent any problems.
OR
Just give the engine a little rev just before you want to take off and it seems to get the engine into GO mode.

I run only Optimax or BP97 (Had one tank of 95... never again).
After 3600 miles in 2 months I am averaging 34.60MPG (Best 36.71, Worst 32.85) That is probably half long runs (Oxford to Pembrokeshire, Devon etc) and daily 35m commutes. You should get a better MPG from the Optimax... whether it is enough to offset the cost dunno...

The MPG has got better with age (Just) but I drive it (Shall we say) a little spirited and my wife drives normally with not a lot of difference in MPG.
Fuel is costing 10.8 pence per mile on average. VCA (http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/) say it is should be getting 7p per mile. (Even with my Volvo T4 I was getting 30% higher costs per mile than VCA were suggesting - much the same with the A2) Probably the difference between manufacturers sales pitch and the real world!

I have to offset against company car tax so I not too fussed about MPG but it I am not getting quite what is advertised so I can see why you would be miffed about the costs you get.

Cheers
Rod
