Later models

I have a question perhaps the knowledge on here can provide, in fact I'm sure it's common knowledge to many.

The later 'Special Edition' cars 2005 year - mechanically is it only the pressed steel lower control arms that differ from earlier models that I understand had cast sections?

Interiors seem to be lower spec too without aluminium trim as found on SE spec cars.

Steering wheel looks plastic and not the bound leather type.

Any other things to be aware of?

Thanks

R

I believe the pressed steel wish bones became standard in 2001. Ours is late 2002 build and has them.

the wishbone change was made for MY2003, I believe. The rest is simply a spec thing, not a "you don't get this on a 2005".

Special edition also have plastic gear knob rather than leather trimmed item. They don’t get front fog lights that “SE” gets standard. They also loose vanity lights above the visors.
Most of these can be refitted though. Cheers Mike

The special edition model was a run-out model which was the only thing you could order when they announced the deletion of the A2 in summer 2004. Around 6 weeks after I ordered Tank in August 2004, they stopped taking orders for anything other than the Special Edition. Basically, you could spec the colour, the engine and that was about it.
To call it a parts bin special is doing the car a disservice, but that's basically what it is. The mechanicals are no different to an equivalent model from 2004.

Okay thanks folks, it seems there is lesser spec trim so that clears up my query. But easily retrofitted items in the main.

And is the Tdi engine the same from 2001 through to 2005?

Cheers

No, the TDI changed around the tail end of 2003 to the BHC engine. It's not THAT different, I believe it's slightly cleaner, but a lot of the parts are not transferable.

Mine is a Sept 2004. The BHC engine (arguably even better thant the AMF) does have some differences. I belive one was the activation of the EGR valve being electronic. I believe the 'runout' models had climate control as default the only positive thing. The only things I can think of (in addition to the lack of leather steering wheel, gear knob and no vanity lights) is the plastic hand brake grip and lack of Ali brake button and Ali trim on gearknob gator. Rear electric windows was always an option but not available on runout vehicles.
