LED Lightbulbs

Hey all! Been a member for a bit now but have never posted anything! Anyway i have just replaced most of the conventional bulbs on my A2 with replacement LED bulbs. WOW! big difference to the look! I have replaced the sidelight bulbs, indicator bulbs and brake and tail bulbs. I got all the bulbs from E-bay for under £25, did'nt know what I was getting but have been very impressed! Just a cheap wee job that brightens my wee car up a bit, hopefully they will last ages and ages!

LED Front Sidelights

Here is a pic of the front sidelights, hope it gives an idea of the difference in brightness, I would say they are 4 or 5 times as bright as the old conventional bulbs! The pic is only the sidelights on! Will post the rear lights when I get a chance to take a pic. (tomorrow)

The costs of the LED's that I purchased from e-bay are as follows -

Sidelights (x2) - £9.14 (inc. p&p)
Indicators (x4) - £11.98 (inc. p&p)
Brake & Tail (x2) - £3.88 (inc p&p)

Just a small point, unless the bulbs are E marked (unlikely), they'll possibly fail the MOT.

Also, A2 rear light clusters are designed with mirrored internals to capture the light from conventional filament bulbs. LEDs don't utilise these, so the lights won;t be as visible from off-axis and will probably be a hazard.

Cheers,

Mike

Led & mot

Hey there, just to say that the car passed the MOT a month ago with these bulbs fitted, MOT station did'nt mention anything re. the lights.

All the LED bulbs have LED's projecting light forwards and also have a ring of LED's around the bulb which shed light round the circumference of the bulb. This ring of LED on the bulb sends light onto the reflectors. I will post pics of the rear light clusters.

Diagram Of LED Bulbs

Hey all! Just thought I would put this wee diagram of LED bulbs, this shows the forward facing LED's and also the ring of LED's round the bulb.

hmmm.. i think I'm right in saying using led bulbs on brake lights will stop your cruise control from working---unless you want to be really dodgy and use one of the load resistors(fire hazard IMO). i run the chrome bulbs in my front and rear indicators as they stop the orange look to them.but other than led numberplate lights and led reversing lights I'll stick with norm bulbs for the rest.
cheers mike

Cruise Control

I am not sure about that cos I unfortunately dont have cruise control. I know there was a problem with early LED's but after checking, the latest bulbs dont seem to need any resistors or anything?

Yes, the latter types do tend to have load ballast in place internally, and this might enable cruise to still work.

However, as a serial modder, this is one thing that I stil haven't and don't want to do.

Each to their own though - it wouldn't do to be all the same!

Cheers

Mike

Interested to see pics of the rears!

Only bulbs i've 'done' are silver bulbs for the indicators, LED sidelights and internal lights is tempting tho.

I'm about to put Ultraleds SMT (recommended on another thread) on the sidelights, but AFTER the MOT. I'll post Before and After pics as soon as it's done (by the end of this week)!

I hope the LEDs will be bright enough to be dawn/cloudy/dusk running lights.
