Looking for your specialist advice

Hello!
I have joined today in the hope that one of your A2 informed members would be willing to advise. My partner has recently died and had bought an A2 in 2018 as a run around. He had never forgotten the first one he owned from new around 2003 and fancied another. Unfortunately , I am not in a position to keep it and there seems to be such price variation in the Autotrader market, I have little idea as to where to price it.

I realise there are specific things you would need to know to help and I may not have all the information but a ball park figure would help me enormously.

Thank you for any guidance you feel you can offer. I haven’t included any details at all as yet as I didn’t want to assume you would be able to assist as I haven’t been an existing member.

Many thanks for reading.

Hello and sorry that it's under such circumstances that you're joining the club.

I am acting as an executor for my best friend at the moment and have some knowledge of the procedures surrounding what you're currently going through. I am assuming that you have authorisation to sell either by probate or by a solicitor's instruction? If so, I'd start by giving a rough indication of the car, year, engine, mileage, general condition, any extras or issues etc and then I'm sure one of the site admins can message you further advice.

I'd also just have a browse on Autotrader and ebay, as this will give you a rough idea too. Sadly, I can't see instant buying companies such as We Buy Any Car, offering you anything other than a derisory figure.

All the best for what must be an awful time.

Dawn,
@Skipton01 has probably spoken for all of us in The A2OC.
Firstly this forum is friendly and helpful, so don't worry you'll get all the help and support you want.
To a large extent, the price will depend on condition, service history, engine type, and model (SE, Sport etc).
If you have the owners manual, look for the service book. There will be a printout on the front page, a pic of this will tell us a lot about the car. Pics of the service record will also help, as will any receipts for work or parts.
Lastly, if you're happy to give us the Reg number, we can see the MoT history, which is also important.
Mac.

Hello, welcome, but condolences on the circumstances.

Just wondering where in Lancashire you are as there are several members that are potentially near you for advice, including myself.

I would certainly recommend selling on here rather than eBay, Gumtree etc as members are generally more genuine.

Very best wishes and good luck.

Hello Dawn and welcome to the forum :) Sorry to hear of your partner's passing.

The issue of 'what's it worth' is a tricky one, highly dependent on several factors, and not a little subjective either. The forum Admin standpoint is that we don't support 'fishing for prices' in the open forum, and any car advertised in our Market section must state at least a target price. But without any figures being mentioned, there's no harm in giving you some guidelines.

1) Condition is more important than mileage at the age of these cars. A completely straight and spotless car with high mileage inspires a lot more confidence in a prospective buyer than a low or average mileage car with dents and scrapes all over it, which has obviously not been cared for.

2) Service history is valuable - stamps in the book, invoices for work done. The timing belt and water pump need doing every 5 years or there is a risk of serious engine failure. A recent receipt for this work will save the buyer several hundred pounds that they would otherwise need to spend immediately, which you could take account of in your price.

3) Anyone can see the car's MOT history by looking it up from its registration number - don't hide this in the advert as it makes people wonder if there may be history of repeated failures and advisories which indicate poor care.

4) A good specification is rare these days and worth at least some money - extras such as leather or heated seats, BOSE audio, panoramic sunroof all count. A car without Climate control is not most peoples' first choice though.

I agree that the price range on the popular sales sites are all over the place at the moment. The A2 is generally agreed to be an upcoming classic now, and as such, many trade sellers are trying it on as much as they can with prices of their A2s. This in turn seems to be leading private sellers to over-value many basic and unloved cars.

Further to @Skipton01's advice, if you'd like to send me a private message with your car's details and exterior/interior photos I'll have a go at a price range for you.

Hi Dawn, as per @RZX response I live in Lancashire and commute daily to Manchester. If I can be of any assitance just ask such as take pictures and inform the other club members of the spec, condition etc

Dawn has sent me some details and photos, it looks to be a good example, with decent mileage for a TDI at 100k and good history. I’ve valued it at a sale price between £1800 and £2000. It’s SE spec as you can see and a 2003 model
