Looking to get an A2

Hi,

I have just joined the forum (very good by the way) and am pretty certain I will be moving to an A2 TDI. I currently drive a DC5 Integra Type R but seeing as my wife is taking a few years off to look after the kids, and that my daily commute is 106 miles, I thought that the A2 looked a good idea to save some money.

We have just been to look at a few and I kind of tempted by both. Firstly there was a blue 75 TDI which had panaramic roof. This had full Audi history but it looked very worn inside and out. It just looked and felt as if it hadn't been cleaned regularly.

The second one was silver and in a lot better condition. But it is due a service, doesn't have a panoramic roof and had not got a FASH (mainly independants which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

The thing I was curious about, is both made a kind of short sharp coughing sound upon startup. Is this normal?
Also the first one felt slightly quicker when I test drove it, but they were both supposedly 75bhp ones. Any idea why?

Thanks for any help

Mark

The sharp coughing sound seems to be attributed to the starter motor. Mine does the same thing from time to time, and i last noticed it this winter. My local mechanic told me it's to do with a certain piece needing a greasing, it seems to be an A2 niggle.
The difference between the two 75BHP models might be related to weight inside the car. If you had your wife and the dealership representative with you on one trip and not on the other, that's what could be the problem. If it were something more serious, you'd have felt a big difference. On a small powered engine, you feel every extra pound.:D
Orrrrrr, it could be that one of the cars was chipped.;) Dealers sometimes "forget" to mention these kind of things.

Thanks very much for the input. I am very tempted by the one with the panoramic roof, even though the interior is no where near as clean as the other. The wheels also need a refurb or changing.
Only other thing I need to consider is mileage. I do 20k + a year and am not sure whether to pay less for something with say 90k and get as many miles out of it as possible, or spend slightly more for lower miles.

Out of interest I read a few posts saying that the gear ratio's are different between the 75 and 90. Which one is better suited to motorway?
Any thoughts?

Thanks again

Mark

Personally I would avoid the opensky roof like the plague (swine Flu?).
I have a solid top 1.4tdi & my wife has a petrol 1.4 with opensky.
It has failed many times, luckily she took out the extended warranty or it would have cost us a fortune.
My other complaint about the opensky is that it is very, very noisy when open
& moving even at fairly low speed, sort of spoils the point of having it IMHO.

My 2001 Open Sky is just dandy, no problems what so ever.
A yearly clean and lube ensures a worry free panoramic roof.
IMHO, the Open Sky is not as much about the climate part but about the way it opens up the car, allowing light to enter, and the freedom factor.:D

Thanks again people. Damn I am confused and conflicted now :D
Just searching through Autotrader now and have found a nice 90 with low mileage for £4250. But it has the cream interior which I am not too fond of.

Thanks

Mark

Unless it has driven to the moon and back you are unlikely to find a 90 for £4250. They werent registered until 53 plate. You find some sellers mis-describing older cars as a 90. Not always sure if this is purposeful naughtyness with the marketing, ignorance or both  :D

Several club members have removed the inner sliding mesh screen and surround and found it reduces wind noise. Its a personal thing but others say they would have the roof even if could not be opened because it makes the car so much lighter inside - and quiter in heavy rain.

I think the couple advertising this might have been tricked then as it is a 2002 with red I in TDI. So just a badge change.

Thanks
