Low Coolant in FSI

The red low coolant icon came on during the week when I was moving the car around on our drive. Stopped and started the car and it went away and I assumed it was a glitch, possible a sensor problem.

Over the weekend the warning symbol came on again and this time it stayed on. Left A2 sulking on the drive and we went off in my car as we were already late for lunch.

After we got back. Checked the car again and symbol still shows so I consult the handbook. Its a bonnet off job to check the coolant so I put the A2 in the garage. For once I was thinking and laid out a blanket on the floor to place the bonnet after getting it off. The bonnet came off OK.

The sensor had not lied and it was down about 0.5 litre in the expansion tank. Re-read the handbook and it says that you can only use a specific coolant. Its 6pm, but I chance a phone call to my local Audi dealer. Parts have closed but helpful salesman says best to call out roadside assistance as they may have correct stuff anyway. If not come in on Sunday and they will find some for me.

Call Audi assistance, and friendly RAC man turns ahead of schedule in 30 minutes. He tops up the coolant with water and tries to find the leak. Can't see a leak from above, so he takes off the under tray. Once off (lots of bolts) he find a small weep from a valve just under the inlet manifold - he says its a complete unit (riveted together , no bolts). Its probably been weeping very slowly from when we got it, as I hadn't noticed any leaks on the garage floor. Car is OK to use on short journeys until we can get it booked in to get fixed. RAC guy writes a little report to give to the dealer when it goes in and he's off.

Putting the bonnet back on was more tricky, especially as I hadn't mad a mental note of where all the shut lines were before I took it off... Anyway, after some careful 'persuasion' its back on again.

This may or may not be a common fault with FSIs, but worth checking for all you FSI drivers out there. Note that the handbook does say to check the coolant level regularly, and not rely on the warning symbol. Just make sure you have somewhere safe to rest your bonnet !

I'll let you know what the dealer has to say when it goes in. No doubt the part will be on 'back order'.

Its not just a problem with the fsi, Ive had the same problem with my 1.4 petrol, when my coolant level was checked at the audi garage there wasn't any left at all, plus they said they couldnt find a leak anywhere. Touch wood its been fine since.

How difficult is it to remove the bonnet?, as I would like to check it myself on a more regular basis.

Getting the bonnet off is easy, though make sure you have somewhere soft to lay it flat, Old blanket is ideal. Before you take it off have a good look around the shutlines so you know what to expect when its back on. When taking it off or on make sure the oil and washer filler caps in the inspection panel are pushed in.

To take it off, first release the inspection panel using the release pull in the drivers footwell. Open the inspection panel and turn the 2 grey knobs anti clockwise, and they should pop out. You can then gently pull the bonnet towards you (I use the grill and the back edge of the bonnet near the windscreen). Then pull up away from the body. Make sure you have room as it would be easy to knock the body. The bonnet itself is reasonably light, but quite bulky.

Getting it back on is a bit more tricky.

There are two round pivot points at the back edge of the bonnet which locate into a small vertical guide slot each side of the engine compartment (windscreen end). Ahead of each guide slot is the rectangular hole that the bonnet actually secures into. Note that the guide slots are just there to help you ease the bonnet into the position. Once the bonnet is dropped down into the rectangular holes they are no longer used.

Be carefull to lower the bonnet precisely into the gap, and not half resting on the wing. Locate the bonnet pivot pins into the slots in the engine compartment. Once the pivots are in the slot you can ease the bonnet down and it will locate itself onto the main rectangular holes. Having lowered it down you can then push the bonnet gently forward towards the windscreen, looking for the shutlines around the headlamps and windscreen. When it looks OK secure using the grey knobs. The knob should be pushed in with the knob aligned horizontal. When fully in, turn clockwise a quarter turn (vertical) to lock.

Whe finished check that the shutlines look OK (as carefully noted down before you started !). Then shut the inspection panel.
Finally check that the inspection panel is still releasable by the relase in the car.
