Main Dealer vs ... ?

Hello peeps,

Could someone please explain Audi dealerships to me. I have vague understanding that there are essentially two types: Main Dealers and ... another type of dealer.
How is their relationship with Audi UK and Audi HQ different? How do their costs differ and how can I find out which dealerships are of which type?

Franchises i thought.

The main dealers have the town in there business name like Stafford Audi, Guildford audi etc.

Now the one we have in MK is Wayside audi (Not MK audi) as its part of the wayside group, then used to have Peter Guilder Audi in Sheffield too.

So I would have thought they are franchised through these groups

Actually John, audi in Milton Keynes has recently re-branded to MK Audi in line with international Audi guidelines. They are still however part of the Wayside group.
