Mayo? Advice Please!

Hi there,
I have a 2002 1.4 A2 which I am really pleased with since buying it a couple of months ago. I have one query which is worrying me. The oil filler cap in the front service hatch was some slight mayo looking like substance in the bottom of it. I have checked the main oil filler cap under the bonnet and this is clean.
From what I remember from old bangers that I used to run years ago, mayo in the oil cap is bad news and is usually means the head gasket as gone. Does anybody out there agree or is there any other suggestions or ideas?
Thanks.

hi baustinuk

welcome to the A2OC
take a look at your water and see if you have got oil in it or residue.
mayo in the oil filler cap can also be that the car has been doing short runs and not warming up properly.
Or head gasket has been done befor you got the car.
Are there any other signs like over heating or misfiring if not take the car on a good run so the engin gets nice and hot to remove all the condensation in the engin.

cheers

If your car has only done a short run, you can get traces of mayo but don't worry, it is only condensation which will go after a long run. If on the other hand you are getting a really big build-up of it, check first that any engine breather hoses aren't blocked, otherwise it points to head gasket failure.

Also, take the bonnet off and check your water level. If you're not losing water then its only condensation.
