Miles to a full tank

As Lee & Tom have already said, the temperature will be the culprit. Note that it'll affect short journeys the most, but all journeys will be affected to some degree (take a look at the bottom of page 6 of the VW leaflet in my signature if you want that expressed in the form of a pretty graph :D).

Make sure that your tyre pressures are OK since cold air is denser & hence your tyre pressure may have dropped - (the pressure should be measured when the tyres are still cold).

Hi,

I've had my 2001 A2 tdi for about two months now. I'm highly impressed with the mpg compared to my previous car; however, my best from a full tank is about 310miles. Admittedly, all the driving I am currently doing is town driving in South London for work, but I do have the odd jaunt down the motorway for 50 or so miles. Is this an accurate figure?

I get more than that from my 1.4 petrol. Are you brimming it ? I would have thought a Tdi should do at least 400 as my petrol does 44mpg a Tdi should do at least 54-6 min. That means at least another 70-80 per tank. Cheers Colin

If you're not venting the tank and brimming it (so just stopping when the pump goes click), then this is about right for town driving / short journeys.

To be fair that sounds similar to mine. The vast majority is 1st/2nd/3rd gear town work and I get a very consistent 45mpg based on brimming readings rather than DIS. Probably closer to 50mpg DIS. It gets a motorway blast every now and again. My fuel warning light is VERY pessimistic though.

If it was A-road work or at least some top gear stuff I could see it easily being well over 50mpg.

I've been getting 500ish miles from a tank - roughly 60-62MPG. But I've just realised something - I'm running oversized tyres - that means my odometer is underreading slightly, which means my car is indicating slightly less miles covered per tank, so MPG figures are also going to be out a bit. It may only be 3-4% I'm guessing, but I'm going to monitor how my daily commute changes in trip mileage now I'm on the smaller winter 15s...

I'm on about 450 showing another 115 miles on the Dis but show 1/4 of a tank left.
I dont usually let it go this low.

Don't forget that you will have to factor in the colder outside temp - ran up to Leicester at the weekend and the DIS was showing a good 3/4mpg lass when the outside temp was at 0C

That may have just been a headwind
I would have thought speeds in winter would be lower and therefore mpg higher, counteracting any increased drag or inefficiencies of engine due to cold
Maybe...

Posted from my iPlop...

Even with the dropped speeds, most people notice quite a deterioration in the MPG. I think mostly due to the cold engine.

1/4 tank miles so far

75% motorway 15% town.

Im looking realisably at about 550 miles. i think its going down quicker now. its building up momentum!!! lol

will post other pics.

I filled up on weds evening (around 37ltrs) and did a bit of town driving, then drove to Birmingham and back (from swansea) and the fuel light just came on. if the manual is correct and i still have another 5ltrs in the tank, I've estimated that to give me around 530miles worth... Or around 68-72mpg. im pretty happy with that, as my previous twingo had a lifetime best of 38mpg!

I've done nothing to the mapping and didnt check the tyre pressure... All i did was drive like an old man and averaged 65-70mph

Does anyone know how to check the size of their tank. I know you can see how much you fill it up, but ive never run mine completely out of diesel and then brimmed it. Would it be a code on the manufacturing sticker inside the boot/on the service book ?

It seems that the clanger goes at around 4-5l left even in the 20l tank.
My tank was showing pretty near empty in the red yet I could only fill another 17.4l.
