Hi peeps

Our A2 has now done 6500 miles, and reverse gear is still so stiff you need to be conan the barbarian to engage it, is anyone else's the same?

I'm nearly up to 5k and my reverse gear is no different to any other gear - so perhaps this is something else that varies between cars.

Hi alfa, mine's at 20000 mi and I still have to engage the clutch
twice in the morning to back out of the garage. Hope this means it'll
last at least 10 years.

2000 miles and the gear box is much nicer than it was when new. Only 4th is slightly sticky to engage.
I drove a 1.4 TDI last week with about 5k on the clock, and the box was more graunchy than mine - it was a serice car though, so prabaly itsn't driven very carefully

AZ,

I remember in the early days of the forum some owners stating that it was most difficult to select reverse, however as you can tell from the return replies this is not a common problem. Clearly you have a gearbox problem of some sort.

Same here !!

I have to push the stick down hard and manouvre the stick in reverse. I can actuallt feel it glide in the blocks...

It's getting better though...

I sometimes have to put mine in first gear, then put it into reverse, otherwise it crunches!

Hi,

After 20.000 km all I can say is that A2 has no perfect gearbox. Putting in the reverse made me angry quite a few times especially after driving cheap Seat Ibiza which had no such issues.

But I have find out an interesting detail. Every time I try to put in revers with a firm grip and firm push down, I fail. That fact made me try a gentle approach and hey it worked. This may be a virtue of the gearbox on my A2 only, but it is well worth of trying.

So here is the procedure. When pressing down the gear shift lever, try not to press it down completely. Before the gear lever touches the bottom, push it forward in the gear position. It should go in smooth and easy. It works for me everytime.

Just be carefull with the gerabox not to put it into first gear. Try this having a few meters all arround the car to make sure you won't hit anything.

Selecting reverse is not a typical A2-item I think. In all my former cars it happened now and then that putting them in reverse did not succeed the first time. I learned not to force anything by doing as follows (and it worked with all my cars):
If I notice I can't put it in reverse, I put it in free/neutral or how you UK-folks name it. Then I lift the clutch, and put out the pedal again. You will see the reverse is smoothly going now.

I really think the A2 gearbox is good; very direct, no mistakes are made changing gears. It sounds like a "klik-klak".

I agree with JanF - my box changes with a slck action, just 4th is a bit slow (llike I said earlier).
Reverse is fine, but occaisionaly 'baulks' and I have to either lift the cluctch whilst in neutral or drop it into first and then reverse - but this is something many cars exhibit. Possibly beacause there is no synchromesh on reverse?

martinw and JanF

You are both right of course, I do it the same if I fail in first try. It just seems to me that I have managed to reduce the need for clutch pumping in neutral.

Being observant I did notice how upon ZB’s return from his honeymoon the first topic that he responded to had the title “Mine’s Stiff How About Yours” – I wonder what a physiatrist would make of this ?

Reverse can be tricky to select in my A2 but on the whole I am not concerned as the gearbox is very positive and defintite. I still prefer the Toyota gearboxes as they require just a palm shift... very nice.

Hi all

Just thought I'd follow up on this problem... our A2 went back to the dealer, and the gearbox wasn't damaged, or anything nearly as bad... they techies just altered the gear-linkage and now reverse, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th are all as easy to engage as each other...
