MK1 Audi TT Opinions?

Possible metal contamination in oil when you change it?
To check haldex find somewhere slippery(grass, gravel road etc) and try to pull off quickly in a straight line.

Wet grass and a heavy right foot...well that was my ‘method’ ?

At least that way you know you have drive to all 4 wheels and aren’t wasting money having the Haldex service done!
Well, as a diagnostic technique, it sounds quite fun :)

Just about to do the timing belt kit, large service and have ordered the Haldex service kit (oil and filter) plus 46mm long dog-leg spanner for the same. At least then I can drive it without worrying about that belt ...

Don't you mean drive it and have fun :)

Well that was the idea. After battling with the belt change (WHO designed that engine mount?), then the service (WHO put the oil filter there?), just taken it for its first proper run using my trade plates.

Now, I should probably say that it's already coming from behind now. If there's one thing that really annoys me, it's poor engineering design and in terms of the above work, this really hit a lot of my buttons. Worse, I used my Subaru Forester S Turbo to collect the thermostat yesterday.

This is another car in my big car sell-off shortlist and until recently had been in my yard at work looking very sad. As sometimes happens, I decided to do something about selling it and refitted it for the road, ready for the market. Until yesterday. I was reminded what an absolutely superb driver's car it is: well balanced controls, sublime chassis, wonderful steering feel, comfy yet chuckable. In winter it has heated seats and wipers, in summer it has a massive sunroof and ferocious AC. And it's rare. A manual, in black with winter pack. I'd be amazed if there are fifty left. It is a bit ugly though: there's no sense of premium whatsoever. Ironic, as despite superficially feeling like it's made from milk crates, it has never, ever gone wrong. There's not a spot of rust on the body, not a rattle, not a creak. Jack it up? Single dedicated trolley jack points front and rear. Timing belt change? No problem, radiator comes out with two brackets, two hoses and a quick release connector: all the space you could ever want. It is an absolute delight to work on, just as all my Subaru's have been. Forget the percieved quality and posh plastics, these are the real engineer's cars.

I always do this with the Forester: it sits there not getting used, I mull selling it and then drive it again and it's safe once more. Seven years that's gone on for! I've spent more in storage than the car cost me. Not sure what that says about it.

The TT? Well, as I say, I've just taken it for a good run. All seems fine with the work and I'm cruising along in the Sunday traffic, pondering life. That house is under offer I notice, those trees are on the turn. Might have bacon and eggs for lunch. Must clean the dog's teeth (will borrow the neighbour's toothbush ... again) and then I remember I'm in the TT. That's O.K., so it's not egging me on, no problem: it's most companionable and why the hurry anyway. Odd how my mind never wanders in the scooby though. There's a gap, I get past and give it some beans through a set of twisties. Hmm. Turn around at the roundabout and do them the other way. Nope. Definitley nope.

And then ... the EML came up: 17544 / P1136, 16621 / P0237 if you'd like to know. Well, you know what? I'm not even going to look. I've marked the price right down in the usual place one might market such a thing. Since I'm on a roll with the losses lately I'll add this to them. It's not for me, and that's before we re-introduce the Roadster Coupe.

I do 'get' them though: as a really pretty daily with that lovely perceived quality, handsome looks and solid drive, yes I can see that, of course I can. But I think I started off this thread wondering if I could have a fair % of the Porsche 996 experience for very few pennies. For me, the answer is no.

Forester wins this round. Next up (and don't worry, I won't clog this place with the next chapter): Forester VS Roadster Coupe. Only one can stay ...
