More advice needed - firmware update!

I've an ongoing issue (as some fellow members are all too aware) with my EML light coming on for no good reason on my tdi90. Its reporting an issue with the intake motor flap.

I've been through an exhaustive and often depressing series of changes to isolate the issue - but in the end all physical things have been checked, changed and verified over and over again.

The autoelectrician I took the car to a couple of weeks back mentioned a possible firmware fix that to be fair closely matches what I'm seeing - ie no real issue but EML light comes on spuriously and then goes off again....

So I booked into a local VAG specialist - he looked and tried to update then reported back today - he cant do it needs to go to a main dealer. I checked with another independent - same thing. Seems the update needs to go onto a CD / DVD and updated from there.

I contacted the local dealer and the depressingly predictable answer came back...we need to diagnose etc etc. It'll cost £50 to diagnose and then we'll decide what needs to happen.

Anyone know any other avenues I can take here - I just cannot deal with a condescending dealership who know less about the car than me and who will probably tell me my intake motor flap needs replaced "cause the computer tells me its faulty"

I simply need to to attempt to flash the car with the updated firmware from 2012 - I'll pay for that!

Angry doesnt cover it

Possibly the same software / cable that is used to remap. Paul any thoughts?

Audifan alas no - I explored this with Paul and he has no access that he knows of to firmware update I'm talking around. Firmware was made available in 2012 believe it or not so a lot if not most cars won't have it applied

Sounds like you are talking about update "4E0 906 961 S" on disk, "8G0 906 961".

This disk: https://www.oemvwshop.com/8G0906961-dvd-rom-p1133014/

Not quite sure what can be used to re flash the ECU with the file though.

tbh I think they need to burn the disc before applying the update so don't know if its this. Everyone I've talked to about it thus far is completely clueless on it if I'm honest.

repair operation is listed as 23 60 25 99 whatever that means :)

Ok I understand issue now. Had a chat with master tech and he explained svm software expects the ecu to match records on servers managed by audi. If not they then refuse any attempt at a firmware update.

Seems I need to use vaspc and the CD listed above and update offline.

Any expertise / guidance on this? I see plenty of people selling vaspc on eBay just not sure if it matters what one I pickup and any pitfalls to avoid when attempting an ecu update.

Obviously a franchised audi dealership won't touch this!

Why wouldn’t a dealership do this? They released the firmware update - surely they had the mechanism to install it? Am I being silly?

I saw it.

I mean I can’t understand why they need to do a diagnostic. They updated the firmware so they should have a process to allow people who bought cars to access the firmware update.

Whether there is a problem or not they should be able to just check the firmware version and update it if it’s old. No additional diagnostic or discussion.

Sorry missed the important bit - the ECU isn't the one that Audi have mated to the car - its now with @depronman in ECU heaven :(

Therefore Audi say no we cant update - when I asked can I order another ECU they said "not available". Very rigid process - we cant replace so we cant help. Seems they wont entertain an offline process at all now - all has to be via SVM.

If you are able to establish which exact firmware update you require, allcarpartfast.co.uk can supply the disc for a pretty nominal sum. But there are a baffling range available. Here's the link for the "4E0 906 961 S" @ajsellors referenced above: https://www.allcarpartsfast.co.uk/vw-audi-seat-skoda/vw-audi-seat-skoda-8e0906961s-cdrom/ which is not the same as the one on the cd he linked to. There's an email address offering advice on suitability accompanying the listing, so that might be worth trying.

Thanks this is mighty appreciated. I had looked at link above - and other links - cost of DVD is marginal but postage is crippling!

I've emailed on that and vaspc...now for some reading on that :)

The Audi technical bulletin was only updated on 5th feb19 and is a online SVM update for ECU of pt no 045 906 019F
For faults19559/16559 V157 incorrect control ,old SW versions are 5632,5418,5349 these can be updated to version7540
Any chip tuning would be overwritten. Any part number *** 906 961 ** is an update CD or DVD .Technical bulletins use to state a alternative CD number if no online update was possible ,there is no CD listed on this bulletin ,so I would presume it is only available through the dealer SVM System, There is always a risk when updating ECUs in this way especially early types with slow transfer speeds via the diagnostic port, so dealers are a bit wary about taking responsibility incase anything goes wrong and leaves them with a dead ECU .So your only option may be to use a dealer to get the update.
Dealers have not used CDs for this type of update for quite a few years, since the demise of VAS PC.

If a CD is available ? You can find out what updates are actually on that particular disc by sticking it in a PC and looking at the file data/help files.

The ATL used -
Engine Management Unit Part No: 045 906 019 F
Firmware version 5418

This is what you currently have Scott

Yes that was what I worked out a few weeks ago when you sent the info from your auto electrician
I think I have found you a source of the firmware 7540 - see email

What are my options here? Original ECU died and I cant get a dealer supplied replacement - its seems a bit off that they effectively cast you aside if the ECU and car dont match in SVM given they can even supply a replacement anymore :(

Have you found a disc with this 7540 SW? If so can you share the part number and I will see if I have it available. The current Tech bulletin is revision 8 ,earlier revisions may show a CD available ,but Audi don't archive older bullitins .

Kustard83,
what I found via a google search found the 7540, but seemed to link it to an EDC17 ECU, which is clearly not correct, so I think a dead end

although I find it hard to believe that Audi would use the same firmware number on two totally different ECU families
