More advice please ... price!

Hello again ... going to look at a promising sounding private sale A2 tomorrow, but I'm not sure about the price.

2004 TDi Sport, very well specced car with sky roof, leather/alcantara seats/ 6 CD, climate, etc. Comes with a Audi extended warranty, service history, but has done 55k miles and asking £9,995.

I'm sure it will be a nice car, but my gut feeling is that it is too pricey.

Any thoughts?

That price isn't bad at all really, for the spec you are getting, plus the peace of mind of an Audi warranty.

Bear in mind that at 55k miles, the engine is only just run in! The 1.4 TDi will easily do 4 times this mileage, with the proper servicing.

Cheers,

Mike

Thank you for the advice, much appreciated.

I know what you mean about mileage, my 2000 model VW New Beetle (2.0 petrol engine) is just approaching 100k miles, and if anything it is better now than the day I bought it. In fact one of my problems is that much as I want an A2, I don't really want to part with my Beetle either, as I've had it from new. I started out looking at cheaper A2's on the grounds that owning one would not cost much (less than a motorbike in fact) but of course I have inevitably found myself drawn up-market and am now looking at cars which realistically I cannot afford.

Ah well, it's only money ... never stopped me before!

:D

TDi Sport

Just remember that as it is a Sport, the suspension does exactly as it states on the tin (or should that be Aluminium can...) Some people love it, and others find it plain hard.
On the question of cost, view the A2 as a very compact luxury car rather then an uprated supermini. As Skipton01 says, the price might appear high at first, but if it is in A1 (A2?) condition, then in the long run it will be worth it. Make sure the Open Sky sunroof works smoothly. If not look for a discount. It might just be the rubber seals sticking (needs lubrication), but geniune repairs on the sunroof are costly (but you still have warranty).

Though mine doesnt have that spec this one makes mine look cheap!!.

Yeah, kinda what I thought too!

I'm struggling to get a handle on A2 prices generally, as even a trawl through the Autotrader website reveals a seemingly huge discrepancy.

Worry not though, I'm a Scotsman, so wallet firmly under control!

:D

skipton i think is on the money (sorry for the punnage)
i waited and waited and waited for the right spec car to come up, it took ages, sport, leather, open sky, bose, false floor, space saver, FASH, warranty etc and when it did, i paid a premium.
well worth it if you are going to keep it for a while

CAVEAT EMPTOR ... yet again!

Well, I travelled all the way across Scotland to see what I presumed to be a top spec, top quality, top price, private sale A2. :(

It was what I would call a "10 foot car" ... terrific to look at from 10 foot away, all nice and shiny, but with every pace forward a new gremlin would appear ... like the two scraped alloys with chunks out of the rim and tyre bead, like both headlamps so full of condensation that they were running wet, like the missing mesh insert in the glass roof, etc, etc.

The car had had 3 previous owners, all of whom were Audi dealers, suggesting it had had a very hard life as a courtesty car/salesman's hack, the full history was somehow missing, it reeked inside of valeting fluids, and so on. It drove OK, but felt more tired than my own VW which has done twice the mileage.

I wouldn't have had it in a lucky bag ... let alone pay £10,000 for it

I sometimes wonder how folk get landed with duff cars which give them grief, I guess now I know. I'm an experienced car buyer and can quickly spot the signs of a troubled car, yet to the untutored eye this was a lovely shiny Audi. Take car folks, it's a jungle out there.

I also see what GBMSU means about the Sport spec, this being the first one I've driven. Nice precise roll free handling, but the ride was very hard indeed, not perhaps what I'm looking for.

Ah well ... older and wiser (again  )

i'm new to A2's, but was at a bca auction last week and watched a red sport 04/04 31k mls go through, much the same spec glass roof etc, fetched 8k exactly, now on ebay for 9k at a dealers, so i guess the car you have seen is strong retail money.

He'll probably get 9k for it. I've seen bashed up London basic 1.4 TDI 2002 spec with 60k miles go for well over 7k at auction last year and I thot it would fetch 5k max! Needed seroius respray and new alloys as they were all badly curbed and it lacked parcel shelf and bits of interior trim!

:D

So am I!

Sadly my TDI 90 has to go as it we now need more seats, but I've no idea what it's worth:

54 reg (2005 model year according to Skipton's VIN decoder)
One owner (me) and only 29,500 miles.
SE spec. plus reversing sensors, 6-CD changer, mudflaps and rear console/cupholders.
90 PS turbodiesel (the important bit).
Ebony Black (the other important bit).
Oh, and an Audi extended warranty until September (which is important as well).

Valuations and/or expressions of interest welcome - it would be nice if it ended up with someone who appreciates what great cars these are.

Thanks.

Yossarian,

Aim for as near to £10k as possible. That is a nicely specc'ed car and is extremely hard to come by. With TDi 90s, it is a sellers market at the moment.

Cheers,

Mike

i look at what car and parkers, one values low the other high, but it gives you a best and worst.
a trader friend says look in autotrader see what there up for, reckons that's as accurate as any!
