MOT Advisory- Tyre Speed Rating Y?

Good news my 1.4 TDI sport has just past its MOT today and looking forward to another clean MOT again but to my surprise the tester wrote Advisory as follows;

"All tyres of the incorrect speed rating. They should be Y ratings this may invalidate your insurance if you have to claim"

I said I disagreed as this rating seems too high but was in a rush so just left it. Got home checked tyres (205/40/17) and front 2 are 84V rated( up to 149 mph) and back 2 are 84W rated.(up to 168 mph). So how does an MOT tester reckon I need Y rated tyres( up to 186mph) on a car that just about does 100mph!!

I've looked in the manual but cannot see any tech ref to the sports tyres speed rating and the sticker in the fuel flap only relates to sizes not speed rating so not sure where he is getting his facts from.

I'm not changing them as tyres have plenty tread left and are a good brand but didnt like the insurance comment. Unless anyone can confirm they need to be Y rating I/m just going to carry on and if I have an accident argue the point at the time but grateful for any comments.

You can get inappropriate comments removed from your MOT test certificate. The MOT tester also needs some more education.

I'm not sure the tyre's speed rating is even part of the MOT. The tester would have to know the top speed of every car that he tests or at least have a complete data base, which he clearly won't do. Also, some cars are not standard. Remapped cars will be faster than standard and the MOT tester won't know this. The fastest standard A2 the 110HP 1.6 petrol can only do 126mph, so would only need H speed rated tyres. When using winter rated tyres, ie. tyres with the M+S and 3PMSF symbols, you don't even need the speed rating of the tyres to match the speed of the car. mytyres recommends at least Q speed rating (160km/h, 99mph) for winter tyres on the 75HP A2 models, and at least T speed rating (190km/h, 118mph) for the more powerful A2 models.

By the way we didn’t ask you if you’d modified your car to do 186mph? If you did, what did you do to it.......jet propulsion!

Fastest TDI in the west!

My A2 is mapped but unfortunately not up to 168mph!

I'll pop back in next week and get them to amend it or offer to ring the DVSA, I'm sure that will do the trick.

If they quibble just ask them to quote the mph your tyres are rated at and the top speed of your A2, ideally in a busy area where plenty of people can hear ...
