searched the forums for a similar scenario to no avail, so here are the symptoms.

clicking/tapping and interior/headlamps and tail lights flicker to coincide with the click, only occurs below 2000rpm (below 20mph) in 1st and 2nd gear clutch pedal raised, removed passenger side floor panel but clicking sounds more cabin central, ran vcds-lite (no fault codes) and no nasty dash warning lights. a friendly local member over on the audi forum has offered his services with full vcds over the weekend, but before that I have checked the obvious, earth points, fuses, battery and bulbs.

anyone had this issue before or come across a thread describing these symptoms, not sure how long the issue has been present as I normally drive with the stereo on and only picked up on the lights dipping whilst creeping in traffic last night with my headlights reflecting off the wagon in front.

thanks for reply, will get bonnet off tomorrow and see if the click/tapping can be pin pointed to that area, its murder trying to listen for the sound it seems to bounce all about the chassis.

just searched pulley, and some great advice how to listen for the sounds from area whilst driving (hose pipe), can see me getting some funny looks tomorrow:D

best find somewhere quiet:p

Had a similar issue on wifeys tdi, can't comment if lights flickered though but initial thoughts were indicator relay which is housed behind cubby hole. Random clicks initially thought only did it after indicating but realised it was sporadically doing it all the time.

Turned out to be indicator stalk! When it clicked no indicators were flashing

I mentioned in another thread how the lights dim whilst stationary using the power steering, I believe this to be expected with the a2 from my inter-web searching, car has done this since purchase and never thought it an issue.

anyone confirm right or wrong please:confused:

Hi,

the power steering is electric driven so some kind of voltage drop is expected when the motor is required to operate under high load (moving the wheels when the car is stationary). It would be worse when the engine is idling and there are other large loads such as headlamps as the alternator won't be putting out much.

My car has always done the same although its only noticeable in the brightness of the lights (e.g. interior lights and headlamps) and has never caused a problem. If something's wrong (e.g. poor earth) then the voltage may drop low enough to cause things to start misbehaving.

regards

Andrew

I asked this question a few years ago and was told "they all do thay sir".

However, I didn't realise it was down to electric power steering. Didn't even know the car had it! You learn something new........

Hi,
my suggestion is to check if the clicking noise comes from the Indicator/Hazard relay box (8Z0941509B) located behind the ashtray or radio. Mine was clicking randomly so I opened it up and cleaned the PC board and relay with contact cleaner. No more clicking.

Thanks for suggestions so far, alternator and indicator relay ruled out after more road testing (cut hose pipe worked a treat;), noise can be described as a metallic slapping or electric arcing, only at low rpm in 1st and 2nd also managed to hear it free-wheeling in neutral, passenger side floors up and the noise is louder so pinpointing it to n/s, I did notice whilst tapping accelerator slightly the noise appeared(not the mooing) only with wheels in motion not stationary.

one thing I forgot to mention, last week I had a loud knock from the n/s front put it down to a pot hole that I failed to see, done some driving circles no noticeable knocking but above symptoms are still present at the lower rpm on both full lock, confused at this one due to the fact the noise and other symptoms with lights is only there at lower speeds.

hopefully get the vcds on at the weekend and it will show the issue, but starting to sway towards bearing, mounts or driveshaft, just the voltage dim on lights is throwing me.

again all suggestions welcomed.

Long shot but check all your tyres for screws / foreign objects stuck in them. Can make a clocking noise more note able at lower speeds etc.

If nothing else one less thing to rule out

spent 2 hours underneath today checking heat shields, suspension, wheels, brakes ect, symptoms still there, really need to get it on a rolling road to pinpoint as only occurs whilst in motion, when in neutral rolling, tapping throttle slightly brings the noise. got me stumped this one.

mot time on Tuesday:confused:

Hi again am i correct that the sound is only there when in motion? if so i think you need to look above the drivers side drive shaft where it attaches to the diff--above the drive shaft is a shield that protects the driveshaft from the heat of the turbo and any grease causing a fire if the gator was to fail. The heat shield is a composite material and the location points are a metal washer-this can wear loose and allow the shield to rub the drive shaft causing a horrid sound at slow speeds. Both our tdi's have had them replaced. cheers mike

cheers mike, checked all shields yesterday and secured a few worn fittings(back box worst offender), picked up on above mentioned. Appreciate the racking of your a2 brain trying to get to the bottom of this.

so far, noise present at low rolling speed, not stationary, lights still affected to noise, symptoms seem to occur when starting to press accelerator, 1st 2nd gear, noise present whilst driving at lower speed up to 2000rpm, take gear into neutral and rolling, clutch disengaged, becomes present when tapping accelerator.

going to get mot out of the way and get car onto rolling road or lift to pinpoint this, cars running fine just with darker nights on the way don't like the idea of the lights.

updated:::got wifey to drive car, I couldn't hear the sound as she passed by me a number of times, but she said noise was present from inside cabin.

Update: issue persists with some new symptom's, last week after a heavy downpour I went through some kerbside surface water, shortly afterwards I got the loud warning bleep and flashing dash lights, I stopped, switched off and restarted everything was fine, got home done scan pulled up wheel speed sensor, cleared code.

Noticed over the last couple of days the flashing ESP light popping up on dash 2000rpm to 3000rpm, the car seems to be suffering fuel starvation in 1st and 2nd associated with the noise I have been trying to diagnose, once up to temperature symptoms still persist but not as noticeable when its cold.

Car scanned with vcds-lite shows no engine or abs faults.

Good news, car went through mot test with no issues. also visiting Northampton end of September so took the opportunity to book it into Tony, hopefully issue will be solved.
