motor managment light

What is wrong with the car if the orange light burns it is orange and it shows an engine?
The guy at our Audi dealer said if the OK light went on you can still drive but what is this light for?

I think the manual says:

The car can drive but the engine management is in failsafe mode (noodloop). So performance will be minimum and speed is with some cars limited to 80km/h.
The car needs to be taken to the nearest dealer.

If it flashes it needs to go the dealer... if it stays on all the time it is something different perhaps? I have only had the flashing variety before on my car...
