Move heater controls to install double DIN

Hello, apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere - I had a search but didn't have any joy finding something similar.

I have a basic spec A2 (late 2002), it has the rotary heater controls (no air con). From the bottom of the dash, there is a small storage area slot, then the heater controls, then the Chorus head unit.

I would like to update the entertainment a bit but obviously don't have a double DIN dash. What I'm wondering is whether I could remove the storage slot from the dash, move the heater controls to the bottom of the dash and remove the existing head unit, thereby creating a double DIN sized slot? The heater control panel would need to be carefully reshaped a little to fit but I think that could be done with a bit of sanding?

Any thoughts?

it's Paul who deserves the real thanks, not me. Not a 5 minute job.

Some other points that drifted through my head.

1. The custom made 3D plastic printer parts used in his conversion are available in his sale thread.

2. I only scanned the thread morning but I don't think it mentioned, which he has subsequently mentioned, that the heater steel control cables need to be extended as too short when the unit is lowered. He did this with cable ties.

3. To cut out the purchase of a double din dash and installation I would give serious consideration to this approach by Kleynie....
