Moving UP!

So my thoughts on the UP! after a few days of ownership:

The ride and handling is great, the body feels so solid and there is no rattle or upset on Edinburgh's broken roads.

There is an amazing amount of space inside, perhaps more than the A2 except for the boot. The thin front seats are supportive and comfortable and leave space for rear passengers.

It is really basic. I knew I would be loosing a few features especially as the "move UP!" is only second in the tier of specifications, but I had failed to realise some of the little things I would miss. The switches for electric windows and internal door locking don't light up, there is no dimming function of the dash lighting, the seat belts don't adjust for height and the steering wheel only tilts and isn't reach adjustable. The last two I was well aware of and don't affect my comfort in the car.

The engine is a little noisy at time but of course it is still being run in. I can't comment yet on fuel consumption and performance because I am still on the first tank of fuel and it is being driven according to running in and not either economy or performance.

Enjoying the new car and it's tiny footprint!

My old A2 is up for sale again on Gumtree. The dealer I sold it to has obviously got the work done and it now has a years MOT. Can I please stress I am NOT selling the car, I sold it to this dealer last month. I can however vouch for the good condition of the car except for the engine problems it had at the time I sold it. I would love to know this A2 ends up in a good home!

Meanwhile I have been very happy with the VW UP! which replaced it.

In addition to my A2 we have the Seat Mii; a VW UP! by another name. It is an excellent city car: the wheel at each corner makes it an extremely manoeuvrable front wheel drive car. We bought it because my spouse wanted her own car, and our son was at the the point of learning to drive ... and the VW UP!/Seat Mii/Skoda CitiGo are in the lowest insurance group.

Last night I was offered a lift by my friend who has a new Porsche 911. I accepted. Unfortunately he was in his other car: a VW UP! which he uses far more than the Porsche :D

The A2 FSI required super unleaded to run properly. VW UP! (not run in yet) has achieved mid 50's mpg average already. Believe me I miss the looks and style of the A2 but the UP! drives better, is lighter despite steel construction and is cheaper to insure, tax and fuel.

i've heard fantastic things about the UP! Most notably the superb ride and the interior looks lush for a small car.

Nice car to move onto after the A2 imo.

Would love to hear more of your experiences compared to the A2.

I have decided to trade it against a VW UP!

Some VW Up! owners are surprised how hard the ride is on the Up! This usually occurs because the new owner didn't understand that the springs that the Up! comes with out of the factory depends on whether the car comes factory ordered with 14", 15", or 16" wheels, and whether the car is an economy model with improved aerodynamics.

If the Up! comes in a version with improved aerodynamics and better fuel consumption than standard, then that model will have sports springs. Sports springs lower the car by about 15mm to improve the aerodynamics, but make the ride a lot harder.

Then there's the 14", 15", and 16" factory wheel options...

Cars coming out of the factory on 14" wheels have the standard springs and therefore the most comfortable ride.

Cars coming out of the factory on 15" wheels have harder front springs.

Cars coming out of the factory on 16" wheels have both harder front springs and harder rear springs.

If you want the best ride, make sure the car comes out of the factory on 14" wheels, even if you choose at a later stage to fit 15" wheels.
