MPG Comparison/Observations

Hi guys i recently supprised myself at the weekend. I have a 75 A2 TDi Sport and I usually get between 56 and 60 mpg on my normal 50 mile a day commute to work and back and pottering around town.

But at the weekend i drove home from Oxford to Clacton(Essex). I checked the tyre pressures, oil, got rid of all the junk in my trunk and filled up at a shell garage and started my journey. I kept the revs low, just over 2000 and i was going at about 55-60 mph all the way and I didnt use the aircon. It made the journey a bit longer but i had a good audiobook to listen to so i didnt mind too much. And i did the same on the way back.

So once i got home and filled up again, i calculated my 260 mile journey at 72.8mpg. The DIS was telling me it was 89.5mpg which i didnt believe too much, maybe there's something wrong with it.

I was really supprised with the results, i did hit some really bad traffic a few times so i guess it could have been better but I am still really happy with journey's mpg. I guess it just goes to show how driving style, a clutter free trunk, pumped tyres and good oil can make a difference.

That's a good achievement. I suspect 90% of the difference was due to your journey and how you drove it. Or that at least has been my personal findings.

I now no longer do my long commute to work and instead have been doing lots of mixed driving through towns and country lanes. I filled up today after 500 miles and achieved 65mpg, which is quite a bit better than I was expecting. For me the A2 is showing itself to be very efficient over a wide range of driving conditions :)

I've been driving very sensibly recently as my own protest against the £1.20 per liter (95ron) as I don't want the oil companies to get any more of my loot than necessary.
Anyway, changing gear @2000rpm and staying at 65 on the motorway I've been averaging 53mpg or 360miles from 31 litres.

Over 911 holiday miles to the Nurburgring and back with at least three people + luggage & full size spare, the roof often open and climate always on set at 18 degrees in high 20s>30s ambient temperature I averaged 42mpg:eek:
I've got to say I'm very, very happy with that:D
The little donkey got worked much harder than I usually tend do, both because of the mountainous terrain there and the traffic jams and ferry chasing there and back:eek:

If I had to find fault it would be the lack of lumbar support and I'd like a bit more oomph (not a fault with the 1.4, that delivers as expected, perhaps more after making the ferry home :) ), both soon to be remedied ;)

The overall average was 47.1 / 6.0 prior to the trip with a worst of 39 and a best of 53.
I always use the climate and often have the roof open so there may be room for improvement there!

Just done a return trip to N.Wales from N. Lincs and was well impressed at getting 67.5mpg from my remapped A2 75 Tdi. Must have had a lot to do with the fact that the M62 currently has 50mph limit with average speed cameras. Downside was I needed matchsticks in my eyes to avoid nodding off!

Yes that is impressive. I'm hoping for the same. Just had 62 mpg (22 kpl / 4.6 l/100km) on my trip to Sweden and back - 4023 miles (6437 km) - with my 75 1.4 TDi with recent 5th gear change to 0.65 (Skipton) and remap of +20 bhp (Stealth) with a full luggage load.

It was a good mix of fast motorway driving and moderate speed (c 50 mph) cross country and some towns/villages.

Alan uk - mine overall is usually 57 to 60mpg. The 67.5 was a freak in that it was 320miles of nearly all motorway with most of that at 55ish mph. Filled up as soon as I got home. Still, the best I've ever got out of my remapped 2002 Smart 599cc is 54 mpg.

Longer 5th gear definitely equates to more mpg!

I went to Gloucester yesterday from Manchester - used cruise on the outward journey and on the return journey travelled along country lanes - the scenic route! (as J5 of the M5 was closed). The mpg achieved was 67mpg for a 310 mile journey. This is good and I expect better mpg in the future if the whole journey is motorway miles. This was a fully laden A2 of 5 including stuff in the boot.

Well i'm going to give the new 5th a good run on wednesday, off to a gig in the big smoke, the roads will be nice and clear as i will be getting to london around the time of the England game so just about everybody will be off the road lol, so i'll see what that does

53.8mpg out of the last tank brim to brim. That's now including the subframe spoiler and the longer 5th. I wasn't exactly sticking to 60mph on the motorways with that tank and again a fair bit of urban plugging in there too, so I think that's pretty good given I have 215/17 Nangkang "Sport" tyres. I don't have the budget to replace all 4 tyres just yet and they've got so much tread left on them too so they'll be staying on for a while yet.

Fantastic mpg

75mpg for a 268.5 mile return journey from Manchester to Gloucester - 16.28 litres of diesel used. Predominantly motorway miles using cruise at 60mph for most of the journey. Return journey was with climate on as it was too hot over the weekend. This was with the 0.659 longer 5th gear ratio. 5 passengers plus a boot full of luggage/sleeping bags.

What size tyres?

There lies the secret, thinner and better rubber. Went to pick up my son from Bristol Uni yesterday and the car was empty with back seats out and at 60mph with aircon off the best i was getting was 67mpg

I think my 215/17 Nangkangs might be holding me back then economy-wise. There's loads of meat left on them though, don't think I want to replace them just yet, or is that a false economy?

I know this wont help but that is exactly what i have done, 215's all round gave about 55mpg, 175's all round give about 67mpg.
That is doing the same route, obviously slightly faster in the corners with the 215's mind ;)

P.S
works out around an extra 120 miles per tank - for me that is a significant saving (although i wil obviously make a loss on the tyres i wil be selling D'oh)

Did you change wheels too? I have just been looking at OZ ultraleggeras which come in 16s but boy are they pricey wheels. Do the GoodYear efficient grip tyres come in 215/40/17? I rather like the look of my A2 on 17s
