The aero mods are three OEM bolt-on parts which Audi developed for the ultra-efficient 1.2TDi (which Audi never sold in the UK). They include; 2x winglets for the front wheel arches, 1 spoiler which fits to the rear of the front suspension sub-frame, and an aluminium cover panel which creates a flat floor over the exhaust tunnel underneath the car. Together they will reduce the aero drag of the car ever-so-slightly.

If you've got a big wallet you could also fit the larger (and more aerodynamically efficient) rear screen spoiler from the 1.2Tdi (also fitted to the 1.6FSi), but that involves replacing the whole screen, or if you're able to find one in a breakers, the entire tailgate!

If you fancy some DIY, there should be some aero gains to be had by crafting a custom-made panel to smooth the rear bottom of the car around the rear bumper (which is currently an open "parachute" and will be a source of drag).

@Timmus
I modified my driving over my previous couple of tanks by only using up to about 2200rpm when accelerating, and keep the speed on motorways at or below 65mph (actually more like 55mph for most journies, but last night I got so bored and was late so ended up spending a bit of mpg and getting home faster so that won't have helped). I also was much more concerted with switching the engine off in stationary traffic. I also concentrated a lot more on reading the traffic ahead and getting off throttle early when I thought I might need to slow down to get into fuel cut-off mode more frequently.

I may also have tried a little bit of drafting behind a lorry on the motorway but lost my bottle after about 2miles :)

So basically, I just slowed down a bit.

dan_b what do you think about the 5th gear + aero mods how much fuel these mods can save on motorway compare to car withaut mods?

I can't comment on the aero mods, but the 5 gear mod makes a difference to mpg on motorway trips.

And you get the added bonus of a quieter ride.

Difficult to give an exact figure as economy is dependant on so many factors, not least one's own driving behaviors, but I feel together the mods have given me at least 5-7mpg better economy without really changing my driving style, and concentrating on efficient driving has probably yielded the same. This time last year I was seeing an average of about 53mpg

its all well and good quoting these astronomical mpg figures, and good on you, if you can drive along the motorway at 55mph - personally i would rather enjoy the car and perhaps waste a bit of fuel.

i recently set my cruise on a 125mile journey from Bridgwater to oxford, and averaged 58mpg with my cruise set at 2500rpm which is 79mph using the taller 5th Gear. but going back the same journey it only averaged 47. (must have been downhill i reckon

i did try doing 65-70 but it did my head in....

I'm with you John, I like to enjoy driving as opposed to simply being transported. I also drive at about the same set up as you, ie 78-79mph on m/way cruise and get high 50's now the weather is warming up a bit. I personally think driving at much below the speed limit on m/ways is more demanding of the driver although a 65mph cruise down the A9 last saturday was very pleasureable and gave good mpg results in the Toledo. With each succesive car in recent years I have set my mpg target progressively higher and whilst happy with the A2 achieving close to 60mpg my next car will have to be a +60mpg vehicle on a day-in, day-out basis. Not sure what that will be to get that and deliver an enjoyable spirited driving experience!

John so your average at 79mph is 58+47/2=52.5mpg with 5th gear, where mine with the same speed is 45mpg 7.5 less, do you have aero mods too?

Every year I'm going on holiday by my car, this journey is only 2400 miles!!! on motorway so I'm looking for some savings.

I dont mind traveling at 60-70 mph, actually I dont see the difference between 70-80mph, for me both speeds are no enjoyable, even I find 70 mph better, quiet, less stressful for cruising then 80mph.

Thanks
Simon

My last tankful gave 61.4mpg using Vpower diesel and driving similar to John, ie with a degree of spirit and 78-9mph m/way cruising. i have the 5th gear and aero mods driving on 195 wide winter tyres with a well optioned car. In other words not the lightest or most streamlined A2 around. Since the car was serviced last month by Skipton autos it has shown a definate and consistant improvement in economy so maybe the airfilter (which was filthy) and other benefits of a service have also helped?

hi simon

no aero mods yet - but im off to see mike (skipton) next Thursday, to have.

aero mods
mfsw
service
komfort blinker.

will tell you f the aero mods make any differance

john

Will be interested to hear how the mfsw installation goes John. Thinking about this myself especially after a week driving the Toldeo with mfsw, but the cost is a bit high. And sorry for thread hijacking!

Had the car serviced last month by Skipton, all tyre pressures checked, fully cleaned and all glass treated and have Just achieved 75 mpg on a motorway journey. My car has the 34l tank. Am very impressed and interested in the Aero mods to maybe magic 80 mpg!

That's impressive mpg. The High cost of fuel dose focus the mind somewhat on more Eco driving.

Cheers

Over the last week I've done a few hundred miles in split between a Polo 1.2 petrol & 1.2 diesel and I want their gearboxes; the petrol sat about 400rpm lower at 70 than my 1.4 petrol A2 and the diesel had the same sort of gearing as my 130pd Passat! The Bluemotion is longer still...I haven't tried one yet but the standard 1.2 seemed about as long as you'd want to go considering it was empty with not much fuel and only me in it.
I wonder if I can fit the petrol box to my A2 :p

75mpg is seriously good going. What speed were you cruising at to achieve that?

Wow, that is incredible! My MPG actually dropped last tankful, which was a little disappoining as had been trying to drive super careful, light foot and anticipating slowing/stopping to minimise breaking. Got 53 MPG this time around, compared with nearly 56 MPG the last fill, I suppose I did have a couple of longer trips that time which perhaps is the reason.

Quick quesition, does the 5th gear mod impact the ratio of the other gears? I've noticed people commenting about driving in 4th at 30 MPH, personally I usually feel the car struggles in 4th at this speed and tend to drop down to 3rd.

1.4 petrol;
last tankful Kent > Wales including roadworks, diversions, sightseeing, 'making progress' = 49mpg.

That was using V-Power (10p a litre more in Wales than here ) and 175/60/15 Semperit WinterGrips on 6x15 steels, it was fully serviced in December (at 71k, clicked over to 79k tonight:eek:).

I wouldn't say you're doing anything wrong, my overall average is 46mpg.
Something that I think helps the petrol is the highish rpm torque peak; cars seem most efficient at or below peak torque and the tdi is soon past this on the motorway whereas the 1.4 petrol does 70 @ 3200ish rpm and peak torque is at 3800 rpm. The 1.2tdi Polo does 70 @ 2100ish rpm and the 1.2 petrol 2900ish!

I've got to update Spritmonitor, it'll be interesting to see what mpg it did while making use of autobahns.

No, it alters only the 5th gear - it drops you about another 400rpm vs standard 5th gear at 70mph or something like that.

Your TDi should easily burble at 30mph in 4th. Mine will burble at 35mph in 5th with the longer 5th gear. What you won't be able to do is accelerate smoothly at low speeds in higher gears. You should be able to cruise in the higher gear and changing down when you need to accelerate.
