Mpg

No, it alters only the 5th gear - it drops you about another 400rpm vs standard 5th gear at 70mph or something like that.

Your TDi should easily burble at 30mph in 4th. Mine will burble at 35mph in 5th with the longer 5th gear. What you won't be able to do is accelerate smoothly at low speeds in higher gears. You should be able to cruise in the higher gear and changing down when you need to accelerate.

Interesting, perhaps I just need to adjust to the feeling that the engine is struggling in 4th at 30pmh then, so should that return slightly better econimy than dropping to 3rd at that speed on average? I always worry about damaging the engine trying to make it struggle in a higher gear than it feels it's asking for.

Not sure if the 5th gear mod will really be worth it for me then as motorway driving generally accounts for probably less than 10% of my driving at best, so probably my average speed is between 30-60mph.

I find cruising at 60 mph but I'm addicted to free miles driving. Downhill my foot is off the gas letting momentum carry the vehicle. Skipton also showed me how to manipulate the skirt on the front bumper which had become deformed. Hopefully this has reduced drag. I do believe every little helps (other supermarket slogans are available)

So how DO you manipulate the skirt? Heat? Brute-force? Screws? Mine has been deformed for 7 years now. Would love to fix it once and for all.

Skipton suggested using a heat gun on the offensive areas to soften NOT burn the skirt. It can then be pushed back into shape when its warm NOT hot and propped in position before it cools down into its new shape.
As I said tho I think it has helped but its not the only factor to better fuel economy.

My MPG actually dropped last tankful, which was a little disappoining as had been trying to drive super careful, light foot and anticipating slowing/stopping to minimise breaking. Got 53 MPG this time around, compared with nearly 56 MPG the last fill, I suppose I did have a couple of longer trips that time which perhaps is the reason.

Well, the above has been my only drop in MPG so far, since then I've been improving bit by bit consistently. Had set myself a realistic target of reaching 60MPG, and today I'm happy to say I got it(60.4 to be exact!), and that's with my standard 7 mile each way commutes to work and back(along with a few other shorter runs), add the fact my A2 is on 17's and without modifications, that's pretty damn good I think.

There's definately a learning curve to getting the best MPG out of the A2, I wouldn't say I drive too differently to how I did before, but as far as gear changes go(and to a degree acceleration), certainly. Pretty pleased with myself now:)
