Multi Function Steering Wheel

Hello all,

Has anyone tried retro-fitting an airbag center section, complete with stereo controls, to the standard 4-spoke steering wheel.

My car is was registered September 2002 so I am guessing it has the CAN architecture, correct?

Is it simply a case of 'plug and play', or do I need to consider adding extra controllers and loom sections.

Thanks in advance

Jonny

You'll need the slip ring (£100), a black box (£30) and a new airbag (£xxx), along with the switches (£no idea).

Still want it?

Ouch

No loom or connector mods then? I know sometimes manufacturers have a habit of including extra connectors for various options.

It got me thinking as I'd just been for a ride in an A4 with the same wheel (+buttons), and wondered if I could pick up a bargin from a breakers or that auction website...

Come to think of it, a 2nd hand airbag from a breakers is probably not a great idea.

Does this mean heated mirrors is a fairly easy retrofit? What exactly is involved in that? Just a new mirror control dial near the window switches and the actual heating elements?

Cheers,

tom

All you need for heated mirrors is new glass with elements built in!

No need for new switches or anything else - they're controlled by the rear windscreen demist button.

The one downside is the cost of the heated glass - both sides are around £80 in total!!!

Cheers,

Mike

I believe that a MFSW upgrade is very do able and I'm intending to do a MFSW upgrade in the near future.

There is an excellent pdf on this website from a guy that has done the upgrade in another Audi Model and I intend to adapt his instructions for the A2.

I've got the wheel and airbag (£30 of ebay) and am currently looking out for the control box which mounts at the back of the steering column, I have the Audi EPC and I am mindful to get the correct part.
My main stumbling block is the programming afterwards. I have fitted a MFSW into my early Mercedes CLK and I had to get that programmed afterwards so that the comand unit knew there was a MSFW and that the MSFW and new clock cluster had the same CANbuS ID. Once I have figured out the wiring and have fitted everything I'll contact Guru skipton and pay him a visit.

Suggest you also talk to skipton (Mike) who has fitted a few MFSW's to A2's. Hopefully he will be fitting one for me next year!

Yes I can vouch for the previous reply
Mike fitted my mfsw
And altered the airbag firing mechanism to match car to wheel
Of course it works brilliantly with no problems!

Cheap fitting as well as I remember it
