If I'd lived near your father I would have been one of his best customers ... I was a slave to new technology from home hi-fi through to a thirteen speaker car system and now home cinema, it's a never ending cycle for me :D

Exactly why I started the whole thread ;)

I have "middling" hi-fi gear (NAD Amp, Mordaunt Short Speakers, Ariston Q-Deck turntable etc. etc.) but most of my money is in the actual physical media. Running to about 20k CDs, 10k Vinyl at the moment ...

I can only imagine how much space all of that takes up ...

It's hard to beat a quality sound Greywolf, it's all in the detail and your set up has it in spades ... I went down the SACD route for a while but it didn't really take off and now more into Dolby Atmos home theatre.
Looking back on the car set up it seems ridiculous now. All the gear was Alpine, two active dividing networks splitting the sound into twelve amplified channels, tweeters from above, mids and woofers in the front doors and rear panels and a 10" sub with another amp in the boot ... you could buy a decent A2 these days for the price of the cables alone. All fit nicely into a Honda CRX, it was never about the volume but you could tune the sound to exactly what you wanted or pump up the volume and give the car an ultrasonic clean..
Long live the 80's and 90's, happy days :D

Thanks ?. ..Wow ? you certainly loved your car set up ..I can imagine that did tot up £££...I didn’t go there but I do appreciate it ..home theatre I only know a little but my son in law loves his TV set up i must admit it’s a great atmosphere sat back watching a film ..for me it’s never about the volume but the sound it’s proved it on here ..a lot of the tracks mentioned were very good recording quality ..this is where it went wrong for me as I liked a lot of Different bands but the recording quality always spoilt the record even if I liked it ..that’s when I knew ide gone to far ?....

Worth a fleet of current A2's Greywolf and sign of a misspent youth ... always found good equipment highlights bad engineering a bit too much, I think the saying is garbage in garbage out, definitely go for detail over sheer volume these days too, better for the ears.

Looks like we're a bunch of middle-aged audiophiles...

I started with a Dual 505-3/NAD 3020B-based system and progressed to Arcam Alpha CD, Pioneer A400, Cyrus 780 and a Technics 3-head cassette desk with Auioquest cables.

Many years ago I owned an early Vento VR6 fettled by BRMotorsport running a Nakamichi CD400 head unit, Genesis Series 3 amps, SEAS components allied to a Diamond Hex 10" sub - audio superbly installed and setup by Audioscape. Fantastic sound either form that unique narrow-angle engine or the audio system, dependent on my mood

Nad 3020, Pioneer Cd, Rega Planar glass turntable with Missions for me ... and every number one single between 1980 - 86 ... cutting edge computer ZX spectrum ... who are you calling middle aged, hang on a minute ... you're right o_O

Ok in the spirit of a proper test, Yellow produce some great sounds that Hifi shops use to show off their systems to potential customers spending many thousands of pounds. I find their music shows up any weakness in a system very quickly.

Drive driven yellow I s another that shows up any flaws great imaging ...did you read my post about Colin wonfor your dad must have heard of him from claymore fame early days ...he calls in once in a blue moon haven’t seen him for a good while though ..he was working on terilium leads etc

Did you live anywhere near Twickenham? It was on London road between 70- 78. One of dads biggest customers was good old Dick Emery. Dick bought 2 Nordemend IR remote control tellies in 72/73 i think it was, huge money in those days £750 each being new technology, they were German made tellies and the first commercially available tv with remote. Trevor Balis of wind up radio fame lived just behind us on Eel Pie island on the Thames, he would pop in for the odd transistor, cap or something and a chat. It's funny the things you remember vividly despite very young, I remember the three day week, no electricity, back then and candles everywhere in the shop etc etc.

Sorry i didn't see your post and i'm typing a reply now. Funny old world isn't it. ? It's widely known now so i'm not speaking out of turn but Dick Emery and his son didn't see eye to eye back then and his son used to spend many days just sitting in my dads shop talking.

Hard to beat a bit of nostalgia Vorsprung, more vivid memories from then than I have from last week, I lived in the middle of civil strife in the centre of Belfast in '72 but I have a tenuous link with Dick Emery, the brass band I played in opened a show in the Grand Opera House when he was top of the bill around 1980 ... never met him but at least shared the same stage, I remember the power cuts and the strikes with the streets full of rubbish too, happy days :D:D:D

? ?

Recognised the Syncro straight way, think i was early 20s at the they came out? I always loved the Gyrodeck too but alas money was tight 28 or so years ago. A Rega 2 was my flavour being so young Lol. I now own a Pink Triangle Export with A Rega 303 arm and Dynavector 20x2 cartridge, all Audiofile bargains that punch way above their weight. Mind you at £700 for the cartridge it's not what you call cheap. Theres not much difference between the PT Export i have and the Anniversary but kind of hank after one or mod mine to anniversary spec with a SME series 5 arm but were talking £4k just for the arm.Need to get the car expenses out the way first. The Anniversary is as the HiFi critics said back in 1990/91 the closest thing they had heard to master tape.

I'M ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHED AT YOUR AMPS. At first i thought they were floor standing transducers but thought what name is that?? Then the penny dropped. I can only think they must be world class and hugely expensive to build. If made and retailed today something like £15 - 20K wouldn't be untoward possibly more. I do like tubed amps but as you know decent ones are lots of pennies. Tim Pavoracini of EAR springs to mind for his tube amps. I do remember the Ruark Sabres well a friend had a pair and so did my brother. I currently own a pair of Monitor Audio Studio 50's which are superb from the late nineties which won't be going anywhere with nice sensitivity at 90db which i'd bet my house on would sound world class with your amps?

I did manage to purchase a new set of Monitor Audi Studio 15's demmed on Krell pre / power you mentioned, i got a good deal on in 1994 paying quite a bit less that the £1700 rrp speakers which back then was a hell of lot for a stand mount. I made my own stands for them that weighed at least 50k each. Still miss them babies in very rare black piano finish, even though not as good as the 50's, sold them to a guy in Germany on ebay for £1500 3 years ago, snapped up within a couple days as they're so so rare. Have you ever demmed other speakers? What mods have you done to yours? I'm thinking crossover mods and internal wiring? Love your Stands and equipment support table, looks as good as the best I've seen. I still have cd but bought the PT stuff 4 years ago because i just missed playing vinyl so much and as you might know there are some superb pressings around. Are you saying your friend who built your amps thinks the Krell is better or vice versa? I've herd Krell but for me just a bit too clinical.
