My A2 "Top spec" project (AKA my Holy Grail)

The problem I had with the surrounds was that I couldn't find a way to split them from the lenses and so the lenses had to be masked hence they were OK but not 100%.

Hi,

if you mean, split like this, its quite easy:

Undo the 3 screws to remove the black mounting bracket and then release the two clips at the back at the top and bottom of the main beam. The refectors just then slide out backwards from the surround. The surround is flexible so can be moved to ease the reflectors out.

regards

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Thanks, it looked so secure and I didn't want to force it.

That means I can now complete the paint job.

Cheers

The problem of twin "Angel eyes" is that the main beam is not a complete circle.

This is a shot of the DRLs I just removed, showing the problem if you want twin angel eyes.

I'd be looking, in my usual "over-the-top" way, to cut away and re-position those reflectors to give two perfect circles. Like yourself, I have a pile of scrap headlight bits, so I can use two main-beam full circles.I thought that you had piad over £100 for Bi-Xenons which incorporated angel-eyes? It isn't those that have failed, is it?

No, the angel eyes in the Bi Xenons are working fine, it was the led strips that I added that failed (but at a total cost of around £7 for both sides that was no great loss.)

Remote key - Smart Top

Hi,
This is the piece of kit I bought to control the windows, fuel flap and OSS remotely.

Not cheap at £100, but I wanted the extra functions it includes.

It does the following

On locking the car it automatically closes all windows and the OSS (without holding down the button)
Pressing the tailgate button on the key fob twice pops the fuel flap
It sets the car to auto lock when driving off (anti hijack feature) withoput having to use VCDS
If you press and hold the driver's window down button all electric windows come down (all 4 if you have electric rears)
Pressing the unlock button twice opens all windows remotely (again without having to hold down the button)

The different options can be programmed via the USB cable before (or after) you fit the kit, there is also a method of changing the options via the window buttons.

To me the "auto close of all windows and the sunroof, when locking the car is a nice touch, also the ability to pop the fuel flap remotely is also a nice touch.

None of this is amazing, or great value for money, but if, like me, you like your gadgets it is a fun piece of kit.
The kit is very easy to fit (I did it!!!) and it is easily removed if you sell the car.
The one thing I am not keen on is that it uses two "Scotch Loks" to pick up a live feed, they are not really an acceptable way of connecting electrical connections, but companies like this include them for ease of fitment.
Ask Tom (Timmus) what he thinks of "Scotch Loks" and I think he might be tempted to use a mild swear word or two.

I bought one in November and I love it!
I would like to have a fuel flap lock with remote control also for the service flap, I have the power inlet to the electrical heater behind the service flap.

I bought one in November and I love it!

Mine started doing something that was actually quite useful, but it is not supposed to do it.
6 months ago, for no reason just locking the car with the normal one click (instead of three) closed all of the windows and the sunroof.

It is only supposed to do this with two clicks (close just the windows) or three clicks (Close the windows and the OSS too)

Does yours do this?

I am not going to complain as it is exactly what I want it to do, but it is not supposed to do it.

Steve B

No, mine is closing with the correct clicks for windows respective windows and OSS. Have you tried to change the settings?

No,

Not touched them since it was installed, but as I say I like what it is doing so I am leaving well enough alone.

hi any chance to post here what led have you used for main headlights.thanks

Hi,

I have removed the ones I used because the beam was not correct and would have dazzled other drivers.

The current LRDs simply can't reproduce exactly the same light source shape that the filament bulbs have.

They either have dark areas (where the alloy that the SMD blob is mounted) or they leak past the "shroud that defines the beam shape.

Hi Steve,

I haven't read the whole thread yet. You have the "Ultimate A2". Just wanted to ask if you have already tried the following lamps as rear parking lights + brake lights:
Philips 12899RX2.

Thanks!

Hi

if they are LED lights then you have to have resistors fitted to the brake light side.

The ABS system uses the draw from the filaments to determine if you are braking.

If both rear brake lights blow your dashboard lights up with several warning lights.

So you have to have resistors wired in on the brake light circuit.

I am trying to figure out a way to do this in s tidy and simple way. I hate fitting resistors to the LED bulbs, it defeats the object.

I had Tom (Timmus) disable my bulb out warnings do that I don't get them when I use the xenon headlamps or parking lights. But the brake lights are a problem.

Wow it just looks absolutely superb, I didn't think you could top your other R8 reps but those are stunning!
Remind me of Yamaha tuning fork

Glad you guys like them !! That means a lot to me.

Yes, I have only ever had Yamahas, but I hadn't noticed the similar design, yes it does, perhaps that is what drew me to them.

Thanks for the kind comments.

I was scared that it might have been a step back from the R8s, but I am very happy with them and they are growing on me!!
