My experience with service and repair recently...

I thought I'd share my experience across two different mechanics recently.
The context is that I've been considering a trip to the south of France, driving down in Diane, my lovely A2.
Beforehand I wanted to have a service done (though it claimed to have been serviced when I bought it I have no idea what was done) and also have the Cam Belt/Water Pump at least checked if not replaced.

There's an Audi dealer near me in Chingford and a specialist German car service place in Camden called Autodeutsche. After reading reviews and getting some ideas on pricing I took her to Autodeutsche.
Now let me say they didn't do a bad job. At all. The service was good and they kept the interior clean. They said the belt/pump should be replaced so I agreed.
They also took the time to send me a movie file of the inspection of the underside of the car, highlighting the condition of the suspension and rear axle.
Cost of the service, inspection and belt/pump replacement was £1100. This feels on the expensive side, but I don't mind paying for quality and to find a reliable place to look after Diane.
The narrative they gave on the suspension was bleak and they really pushed the state of it, lots of tutting and shaking of heads. At this point I felt they were being a little bit disingenuous, but I didn't have enough knowledge to point to why. I asked for a quote for all the work just to get a sense of the scope.

They told me it would be approx. £6000 inc VAT. Now that IS a lot, but if it's the price then that's the price; I bought Diane as a keeper with the knowledge I might find unexpected costs and work.

I drove home in a state of fear that the entire car would collapse from underneath. Diane is in great condition and low mileage, engine is sound and the gearbox solid so it feels there's lot's of benefit to putting some effort into her, so I thought I'd seek another opinion.
The usual excellent service from this forum produced a recommendation for a garage in Hounslow, massive thanks to @Kleynie for his referral.

Now Autodeutsche is very polished, lot's of glass dividers and logos etc... This place was much more of a garage. Cars parked in various states of repair arranged in the Tetris-style, oil, parts and tyres stacked around and a radio playing Careless Whisper. Definitely less posh and ordered. The difference was in the people. Now I'm not super macho, but I do know a little about mechanics. The guys there were a pleasure to speak with, respectful and informative.
It was done while I waited so I had to kill an hour or so in Hounslow Central (a little scary).
They did an inspection, took me across the whole underside of car, pointing out everything, reassuring me about what needs doing and when and with what, we discussed me sourcing parts I wanted to use (which is also cheaper) and also took the time to dismantle and readjust the brakes on the rear. All of this for £60. I even tried to drop them a little more for their service but they wouldn't take it. I left feeling confident about their ability, informed about my car and respected as a customer.

I'm in the process of procuring parts (guided by posts here on suspension etc...) and look forward to having the whole thing done by trustworthy people. Total cost will be high but likely less than half I was quoted before, and I'll have piece of mind about it.

Thanks for sharing this Rob. As a fellow London resident I feel your pain: any servicing carried out in London it's just extortionate. The average cost for cambelt and water pump is £600, whilst annual service is £300, give or take. Going to the dealer is not an option, would be nice but financially irrational for the service given, whilst going to the wrong independent garage can cost a fortune.
I have been using the same indy garage for many years, near me in west London and whilst they know the car and they do good work the rates are inevitably expensive, just because it's London.
I tried once to go to highly recommended garage 2.5 hours drive from London, specializing in tuning to replace my press steel arms to cast ones, as their quote was much cheaper compared my trusted London garage. In the end they mounted by mistake new pressed steel arms  and leaving the cabin filthy. Go figure.
There are many good, honest, talented garages outside London that offer serious value for money but this means travelling and logistic problems (dropping the car, return via train and so on...).

Wow that Autodeutsche company reminds me of the Harry Enfield sketches ... 'I Saw You Coming' ... personally I've stuck with the same trusted independent VAG specialist for the last sixteen years ... I don't mind buying genuine parts from the dealers for doing my own servicing etc but wouldn't dream of paying the extortionate prices you have quoted ???

Uncanny that was exactly my first thought! At these prices there will be no A2's left in London and to think the back brakes still needed attention after a £1100 bill!!

Hi Howey ... I needed a quick fix a couple of years ago when on holiday and stumbled upon a small independent called VAAS Autotech Pontefract ... not too far from you and they diagnosed and recalibrated my throttle body ... bent over backwards to get me running properly, even give me a a full VCDS scan print out ... all for £30!!

Wow thats amazing, thats Yorkshire!! Lol!!
Not a garage i am familiar with despite only around 10 miles away, but great to know if my backs ever against the wall!!

My A2 has a holiday in Sheffield every year for its mot, and also any other jobs that aren't doable in the car park at work on a Sunday - that's if they're not done by @depronman . I live in West London and it's much cheaper to go up north than have anything done locally, and that includes fuel and return train tickets if it can't be done same day.

I vouch for @depronman also ?
Top bloke whose knowledge, skills and time he gives to fellow members is a credit to the club.

I'm in the North East corner of Hampshire. Sadly, can't do DIY (mind is willing, body, not so much). Recent (June) full 1.6 FSI service, plus cam belt, water pump etc, all OEM parts, and MoT, £980 at local VAG Independent. Not much smoked glass, but large spacious, well equipped, and tidy work shop. Friendly, helpful. Also tends to my TT's needs. I'm happy I'm getting what I pay for, and I don't think I'm a soft touch.
Mac.

Given that you’re close to my parents in Fleet, it’d be great to get the details of that place.

That £6000 quote is extortion. Simple as that.

If the MOT is genuine and the tester passed the rear suspension, then it will not be defective.

It may well have substantial surface rust and this can be sorted in the warmer months by putting the car on ramps and getting a wire brush in it, some rust converter and a decent top coat.

If there are holes in the rear subframe / axel then these would have shown up in the MOT - they don't just glance over it.

I think structural rust would be rare on these cars, no? unless they've been parked on a seafront all their lives

Hi, I live in Sheff and am always on the lookout for a reliable garage, as i've gone to a few and not found one yet, so it'd be great to know where you go if possible?
Cheers

I agree, I felt then and feel now that it's awful to quote that.
Once the chap in Hounslow had inspected it he indicated exactly what you said, it has a lot of surface rust but just needs a good clean up.
Diane lived all her life before me with one owner in Scotland so I am not totally surprised at the underside needing some love.

Update: I've ordered pretty much everything now to replace the entire suspension setup, rear brake plates, including bushes, nuts, bolts etc... and snuck it in under £900. That's including Bilstein B3 shocks with B4 springs front and rear.
Once it's all arrived I'll do a last check and then book it in.

Autohaus have a good reputation for VAG in Sheffield. If you just need an MoT, then the MoT Centre on Broadfield Road are very trustworthy (MoTs are full price, but they are fair and can be trusted - I've been going there with cars, bikes & campervans for 20 years). If you just want an honest, small garage (not VAG or A2 specialists) and don't mind travelling a bit, then Barnfield Garage in Hathersage are very genuine and reasonable.
