My new modern classic

Hello to you all. After a long wait I have at last purchased an A2 75bhp Tdi SE. It joins my Mk2 Fiat Panda 1.2 which I love very much and my pampered Z3 which I have had for 13 years. Yes my long distance car for business may be a Kuga, but I obviously love modern classics.

Knowing I was buying something of a project, my A2 has just over 190,000 on the speedo and main dealer servicing finishing at 135,000. Aware of some jobs, unfortunately the drive home showed up a turbo power drop at 70mph. It had gone into a safety limp mode which after stopping and restarting, went away to then reoccur every time I had a steep hill ahead of me. I managed the 90 miles home and put my code reader in to find nothing listed! I have booked the car into Cahill Motors a VW / Audi specialist in Dorchester, but have to wait until next Thursday before this happens. Anybody with any experience with either this garage or thoughts on what is wrong greatly appreciated.

My car looks very tidy inside and out with most things working well. The temperature guage, only moves a fraction so perhaps this has something to do with the turbo issues?

Pleased to be part of your circle, best wishes Mickyvino.

Welcome aboard :) Congratulations on your purchase, I'm sure you won't regret it even if you currently have more issues than you were expecting.

The limp mode under load sounds like it could be the intercooler. They weren't the best quality from new and tend to blow out their end-cap seals.

The low temperature gauge is most likely a failed thermostat but could also be the temp sensor unit under-reading. Replace both with high-quality parts, preferably the OEM ones, especially in the case of the thermostat.

Welcome aboard.

Caution needs to be advised on these cars, many current Audi dealers don't actually know what they are, or have ever worked on them, they are getting on for twenty years old. These wonderful little cars do not suffer fools gladly, so tread carefully. VASS in Bath are pretty good. There is an emminent member in Bath who may have some good ideas.

Best of luck.

I use B&F Autos in West Hounslow. Terrific A2 specialists, very reasonable and close to the Tube. Talk to them nicely and a loan car is available.
Just past Heathrow and off the M4.

Hi, many thanks for your thoughts It's very encouraging. Just took it out to buy a newspaper and it's rather frustrating. I shall park it until it's at the doctors! I shall suggest your comments and cross my fingers.

Hi, thanks for the advice on the potential problems with service items. The specialist in Dorchester are not a main dealership so I'll post my findings. Shame I'm so far from Heathrow!

Welcome to this mad club!!

I encourage all members (new and old) to have the following..

At least two fully working keys.
The owners manual as it contains useful information.
A good multi meter..
A VAG specific diagnostic tool. Preferably VCDS as many generic readers are totally rubbish when it comes to the A2.

And plenty of time to read through the many postings on here to increase your knowledge and often even answer question before you ask them.

For genuine Audi parts, contact Tom @CreweAudi via PM. Best service you'll get from an Audi dealer.
Mac.

There’s also DS Motorsport in Coventry - very knowledgable and a little closer.

Also Tytherleigh Auto Electrics in Chard are very good with my car, if you call them, make sure to speak with Ed and tell him Dave said to call.

The chap who had mine for 20yrs used Dan Walters in Fordingbridge and they were excellent and not too far from you
