My old VAG cars

I also had a helios blue mk1 golf gti campaign. Apologies for poor picture quality, took pic of photo. When i purchased it the car had a full bbs bodykit on it and zender rear spoiler. Luckily it wasn't bonded to car, so within a month i had it looking all original. Except for compulsive grill spoiler and rear spoiler.
Mine wasn’t a campaign model, which made the colour very rare, as every other Helios blue car I saw was a campaign. Mine also had the zender roof spoiler fitted by me as well as a grill spoiler.

I've been looking forward to replying to this thread :)

I used to be heavily into the VAG/VW scene and would do most shows on the circuit for quite a few years, I also worked for PVW as a photographer back when I had my own business.

Mk1 Convertible with a G60 engine (and brakes!) Picked it up on Christmas eve with a mate of mine and drove back from Yorkshire the whole way with the roof down, frozen but grinning!

Next I had the red Mk3 you can see as a daily, 1.4 petrol which really did me proud, asking for nothing apart from a bit of a polish of it's faded paintwork. Also the Mk2 had a VR6 engine, was a bit of a project although I never did much with it as I had the G60 Mk1 at the same time.

Next, I had changed careers and decided to be a little more sensible with a 1.8T A3. Then I stuck stupid wheels on it! Later I had Audi Monoblocks which suited it better and didn't protrude the arches quite so much!

Sensible phase over I bought this ex magazine featured early Mk1 with a G40 engine. Great fun, loads of character and unfortunately on it's way to have air-ride fitted, and other work, it put a rod through the block! I spend some time stripping it down but I just uncovered far too much body work that needed addressing so I moved it on uncomplete.

Now my absolute fav, one I should never have sold. A Golf Rallye. G60 engine, 4 wheel drive, factory wide arches, BBS split rims with stainless lips, it was an awesome car. Partly because they're so rare, approx 500 made it to this country, and partly as they're now worth about 5x what I sold it for and probably out of reach for the foreseeable future for me! Glad I owned one, it's probably the only car (apart from an A2 of course!) that I would gladly own again. I sold as using it daily, drive train and body panels were very hard to get hold of, even 10 years ago (wow, has it been that long already?!)

Last VAG before I bought an A2 was an S4 AVANT. I expected to be wowed by my first V8 but instead it was a little underwhelming. It had more power than the E46 M3 I'd had previously but didn't feel like it, the sound through the standard exhaust system was a little too understated and the 6 speed manual box ratios were not very good, motorway speeds being nearly 3k rpm in 6th! So when it was time to switch from an 8m commute to an 80m commute an A2 seemed the sensible & only choice!) Little did I know where it would lead me...! :)

Other non VAG cars along the way:

Ford Escort RS Turbo. 30k from new, I hardly ever drove it, spending most of it's time being polished or living in a car-coon in the garage. It had a few awards from show and shine comps.

320D Touring. This was a superb car for me, did loads to it, not that you can tell. I have always liked the OEM+ approach.

Z4 3.0i Great car, I loved the long bonnet but I wanted something special and it just didn't have that for me, hence...

...M3. This had that special feeling I wanted, great to drive, really liked the SMG full throttle gear changes, the only downside was running costs that supported the £60k+ original price tag. £900 for a service one year!

Sorry for the long post! It's great reading about some of your old cars and memories of the shows etc :)

@Muska I was always surprised by how few people put G40 engines into Mk1s. It always appeared to be the ideal engine for such a car, much better engineered than the 16v. I suppose scarcity of donors was the main reason for the lack of them.

@Muska I wish Id have known about this, I could have shown you my whole back catalogue when I saw you!

Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures.

@sciroccorrado it was a great engine, well suited to a lightweight shell like a Mk1. Tons of character too, when changing gear at boost it sounded like it was sneezing (venting to atmosphere)!! I did have a journey in a Mk1 16v once and it was extremely quick, I've just always liked forced induction or something with a bit of soul, like an R32 (I'm intending to buy one of those next year and garage the Storm).

@Kleynie you would have never got rid of me! :D If you have any more pictures though I'd love to see them.

I was chatting with someone at ADI and was asked why I chose a colour storm. I only worked out recently why I like them so much, it's because they remind me of a Mk2 GTi, painted body with the plastic/mat arches and bumper trim :)

I loved the Supercharged VW engines. If ever I get back into Corrado ownership it would be with a G60 rather than a VR6. Having owned both, it was definitely the G60 that gave me more smiles per miles.

I have a Mk2 and would have really liked a colour storm for exactly the same reason. :)
