MYP with AMF: Which starter motor?

Hi Everyone, Apologies if Ive missed this in another thread. Could anyone who has put the 6 speed MYP gearbox from a Passat into a 1.4TDI 75 with the AMF engine let me know whether they kept the starter motor that was with the AMF engine or replaced it for something else please?
Many thanks
Nick

Hi,

Try a Google search "a2oc myp starter" which throws up lots of threads. A quick glance shows lots of discussion about starter motors, might answer your question.

Hi. Thanks for that. I’ve had a good read through. Most of the discussion seems to pertain to the ATL engine (90) which has a DMF rather than the 75.

Oh well, one last attempt, a more targeted search found this which seems more apt but as it seems a big thread you will have probably looked at it.

Thanks Spike. I think I could recite that thread at this stage :) All mention of starter issues there are to do with the 90. Ive had my starter out and its been tested. Works fine. But in the car its making a racket when starting. Seemed fine before we swapped the gearbox. I think Timmus alluded to potential issues with the MYP on a 75 somewhere here but Russ and others have confirmed that the AMF MYP combo works. hmmm. Ill report back tomorrow if I get to the bottom of it.

Hi, I have MYP 6 speed fitted with the original A2 starter. There is an issue that the spigot on the starter is slightly smaller than the location bore. Therefore to avoid issues you just need to secure the starter in a central position in the bore. This has to be done by feel.
Its best to fit the Passat starter which fits the gearbox. Problem is there are 2 options I believe, and I dont know which is correct!

Ahah. That's great info. We'll look at refitting it tomorrow and pay attention to centering it.
Many thanks

maybe a 'spacer ring' would be a better long term solution, it will both locate the starter in the gearbox correctly and prevent it 'creaping' over time, remember there is a lot of load but through the starter motor, plus the fact that the load is a shock load every time it engages the flywheel to start the engine
If you can measure the gearbox bore and the O/D of the starter motor and establish a length I'll see if I can print a spacer ring in ABS.
alternatively a strip of aluminium of the correct thickness could be rolled to form a spacer ring.

Not a bad idea Paul. I guess a metal ring would be favourite. If just a ring then would be best to bond it in place with threadlock to prevent movement.
That said whilst mine is working ok I am not going to remove the starter to measure the locating bore!

The AMF starter is about 3mm smaller in diameter it seems than the receiving hole for it in the gearbox. So theres about 1.5mm wiggle all round. We've got the starter lined up now so it works but the sound of it starting is not as "clean" as when it was in the original gearbox, despite spending a good bit of time getting it lined up as best as we can, by Trial and error and listening as you cant see obviously. Im going to get the starter from the passat that the MYP came from and see if thats better. I'll report back next week.

I used the starter that came with the gearbox, because of all the grief the protagonist in the thread cited in post no. 4 had in getting his to work properly. It's clear the pinion on the MYP starter has more teeth than the original. The original one may fit, but the gear meshing will be all wrong, leading to problems and poor torque transfer between starter and ring gear (as you move the centres apart, the effective contact angle goes up because you're running on the tips of the involute form, which reduces the efficiency of the gear pair). I've had my gearbox in for nearly a year and the starting has never been a problem.

Using the starter from the original gearbox may work, but it won't be as efficient as using the correct 13-tooth pinion, and is bound to wear out quicker (probably taking the ring gear with it).

Good luck.
Mike

Just to follow up, yesterday i had the starter motor from the 2014 passat that i got the gearbox from fitted to my A2. It works perfectly. The starter from the A2, once adjusted into place, had been just ok but it didn't sound great. The starter from the passat, with its 13 teeth, works perfectly. If you are fitting an MYP gearbox to your AMF engined A2 grab the starter motor from the donor too I guess.

On the 90 this is a much the a2 starter doesn’t really work well, and will not fully interface with the flywheel
