NCAP Crash Scores A2 v Q7

Yes, I fully accept Weight is Weight but impacts and their results depend on a lot more than F=ma

The Big Merc vrs Smart car video is a good example of how loads can be transfered around structures.

The other issue is how to avoid collisions in the first place: The larger your car the more likely other traffic will hit you simply by being a larger target and being less likely/able to move swiftly into a suitably sized gap particularly in confined spaces (eg: B road). Where possible aiming for the gap is always the best route to avoiding impact. Research shows most of us look at the oncoming car or freeze at the wheel instead of looking and steering beyond it.

Re the Volvo/Modus crash:

I may be mistaken but looking at the front of the Volvo after the crash seems clearly to show that they had taken the engine/box out beforehand. This would greatly skew the outcome in the favour of the Modus.

Watching the crash a second time seemed to confirm this as it would look like the cars had similar momentum (and therefore mass, if the velocities were equal) at impact.

This "tweak" wouldn't be surprising for TopGear as they never seem to be much concerned about facts getting in the way of a good story. It's great entertainment but poor education.
