Need help to replace a coolant sensor

On my 1.6FSi

The 4 pin sensor which I assume sends the ECU the temp and also controls the rad fan is stuck (or at least I think it is there) behind the block end of the EGR pipe. How can you get that out easily? I have tried and I just cannot get the access without removing the EGR pipe. As luck would have it, I also do not have a "spline" bit to remove the EGR pipe from the block.

Any suggestions or anyone in the Hounslow area could help me out?

I'd be interested too... I just got quoted £217 by Finchley Road Audi to make the swap. I haven't looked yet, but aren't they just held in with a clip like other VW's?

1. Unhook the wiring harness
2. Remove the clip
3. Remove old sensor
4. Install new sensor
5. Replace the clip
6. Connect the wiring harness
7. Top up and air-bleed the coolant.

Seems like 15 min work to me...

On the TDi it's definitely a 25min job - only issue is slightly restricted access round the back of the cylinder head so you can't directly see what you're doing, but it's no problem really as you can get your right hand in there ok.
I get the impression from Pummy's post that on the 1.6FSI it's more tricky because there is more plumbing in the way!

Do you have a TDi or a petrol?

Sorry, should have been more specific. It's a 1.6 FSI... and I've just discovered that it "should" be covered by my insurance. I'll wait to see what they actually pay for first...

Pummy should be able to clarify then.
Stuff like this isn't often covered by warranties.

As I just bought it from a dealer, and they've supplied me with an extended warranty that they assured me would cover this situation... so I'm at least 50% sure I'm not paying for it. Never can trust used-car salesman, otherwise it would be closer to 100%.

There is basically not a lot of clearance in front of where the clip is to deal with the removal, sensor removal, sensor replacement and then refitting the clip. I am talking about maybe 30mm space in front as the EGR pipe sits in front and cannot be shifted easily to facilitate access.
I am looking at getting the water pump changed and see if I can do the job at the same time.

As is typical with the dis-organized (or is that profiteering?) dealers... they just did my cam-belt and water pump, but then diagnosed this fault AFTER it was all back together... even though I made sure it was on the worksheet. <sigh>
