New 6 speed gearbox method - passat '11 onwards MYP gearbox

Bigger engines are coupled with MQ350, that have three shafts instead of two (MQ250 like MYP). Retrofitting might be possible, but it is complicated. The MQ350-6 is heavier than the MQ250-6.

IMHO, a PTW gearbox from A3 1.6TDI Ultra or Golf VII BM 1.6TDI ist even better than an MYP from a Passat. The only problem is that it is a rare thing:)

Sounds exiting but would it be a straight swap? The MYP sounds like it needs minimal intervention to fit.

Both are listed on fleabay for under £500. One had only done 11k!

Cheaper by far than a recondition and a new 6th gear (I seem to think this was around £1500 or has it changed?)

Finally I changed MYP gearbox to my audi. it was easy job.

I combined front end of 5sp casing with the MYP diff, then 6sp main casing and 6th gear end casing.
and it was easy put a speedo drive to MYP diff. i just took out the diff bearing and I changed the speedo gear to the MYP Differential.

Speedo gear is plastic.

Great work Terde! Yours is a 2001 yes? Was it an EWQ before?

In this case, I would opt for the PTW.

Top work! Some people have a different definition of easy ...... :)

I don't even understand the bit about speed drive and differential bearings being swapped!

Easy? Hah!

I suspect bearings not swapped - just pull off the inner race from the diff in order to access the speedo gear and then replace inner race and rebuild. Still clever though!

I was playing with the same idea for quite a while now. Got MYP last November, now
old gearbox is out of the car, both boxes cleaned in preparation for the transplant.
Thanks to everyone's contribution in this thread there are now several options available.
Great club, isn't it!!

Boris

I'm still waiting for the step-by-step idiot's guide with pictures. Boris? You fancy writing this up?

I will do a write up, but not very fast. My simple repair project has taken a
turn as many of fellow members here have experienced . Now I'm putting
a 6 speed MYP in, my limp home problem will hopefully be fixed as well (new
intercooler and silicon hoses) and later on ceramic coating as per timmus's
excellent and very inspirational thread.

I must mention, I've never opened a Gearbox apart from my old 110 Defender's
so I'll be going slowly and carefully. It doesn't seem to complicated, now I've said
It'll bite me back, I'm sure.

Planing to swap the bell housing this weekend if all is well, so first few photos
early next week.

Thank you Boris - that would be MAGIC! Good luck!

This ebay pic (the middle one) shows the old design speedo gear sandwiched behind the taper roller diff bearing. There was always the question whether the later gearboxes with electronic drive speedos would still have the facility to install the plastic speedo drive gear so it's good to know the conversion has now been tried and tested
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-POLO-G...558273?hash=item3ae83f2fc1:g:jx8AAOSw1XdUWOqr

Looks like it could be a bit fiddly to remove the old taper bearing and take off the plastic gear without damaging it. Then, if you're unlucky the diff may need re-shimming when the old bellhousing is fitted to the 6 speed box

Please add my name to the list of people who need an 'idiots guide'

Cheers Spike

I think I saw a better picture further up the thread.

Re-shimming is a serious possibility, so if anyone has some data on the subject I would really appreciate it.
I'll see how it goes soon enough.

Cheers,

Boris

Dismantling has started and as I said earlier, without a manual or some tech info it's a difficult task. I've managed to split the casing but it won't separate.

In order to avoid stupid mistake I'm asking for help here. I know I must dismantle perhaps a shifter tree, or something else, so please feel free to give advice/suggestions how to proceed. Perhaps a link to relevant info. Anything will be appreciated!

Doing this without a manual is probably asking for trouble - the reason it won't separate is probably because one of the detent mechansims needs to be removed. From doing other transmissions this is usually one of the caps you can see on the side of the housing.

When it comes to re-shimming you basically fit the diff on it's own in the casing and tighten the casing fasteners - you then use a torque meter to measure the amount of resistance to turning the diff - it will be quite a low value and you can't do this with a regular torque wrench although there are some ghetto techniques you can use instead (lever / string / fish scales). If the torque isn't to spec then you dismantle and fit a different thickness shim under one of the diff races to increase or decrease the preload.

Simon.
