New A2 owner

Good afternoon all. What a fantastic and informative place this is! I have a 1.4tdi SE, 2004/54, 111000 miles and going well. One previous owner, full Audi service history from the same dealer since new. No cruise, no DIS (sadly). Photos to follow after its inaugural run from Kent to Durham and back this weekend :)

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew, welcome aboard!

Enjoy the road trip to Durham and back. The TDI is an excellent motorway mileage muncher, so I hope you have a comfortable and economical journey in your new chariot. :)

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. The car has one pressing problem which has baffled my local garage for the past couple of weeks. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post it, so please forgive my "forum ignorance" if its not :)

There is an intermittent (the worst kind!) rattling/chattering sound between 1200 and 2000 rpm which rises and falls in pitch with engine speed. Its reminiscent of a loose undertray/wheelarch liner but these have been examined already. It happens more when I'm driving but can be heard when I increase the revs to 1400 approx whilst stationary. So far, the cambelt, tensioner and water pump were replaced last week, and didn't cure the problem. The garage admitted they had misdiagnosed, and kindly replaced the oil pump drive chain, tensioner and sprocket yesterday (all FOC) but to no avail. It was something they didn't have to do, but I think they felt duty-bound to, and I'm grateful to them for their decency.

So, I'm at a complete loss now, any bright ideas would be hugely appreciated!

Hi Andrew, and welcome to a great club, this may sound weird but may be worth checking and replacing as its a quick and cheap fix, the bonnet locators (the plastic inserts) located on the bulkhead area near the windscreen, these are prone for failing and only a couple of quid from Audi, they give a vibration when driving! Something worth eliminating and something you can do yourself! If you can press the bonnet down at the windscreen end this shows signs of wear, well worth a try!
Cheers jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for that. I had originally thought that may be the problem, but the same noise is apparent with the bonnet off the car too. My other suspicion was the alternator pulley, but that's already been ruled out. Its really puzzling, but the work that's just been done can only be viewed as preventative medicine, and as half of it was done FOC, I can't really complain too much!

Cheers

Given that you've got a 54-plate A2, I imagine this won't be the cause, but worth checking nonetheless...
Is the MAF sensor housing tapping against the top of the upper engine mount? This affects earlier A2 TDIs much more, but worth checking anyway.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately that has already been eliminated, so I'm none the wiser but looking forward to a future filled with head scratching!

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

A couple more things for you to investigate:

Alternator pulley/clutch - this can fail and cause all manner of weird noises.

O/S driveshaft inner CV boot cowel - the two eyelets that retain this cowel are prone to elongation causing various vibrations.

Good luck in resolving this annoyance.

Cheers
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I've really started something here haven't I.....!

Local garage (the one that did the cambelt etc) test ran the vehicle with the poly belt removed, and eliminated the alternator pulley, but I'll certainly take a look at that cowl when I'm home at the weekend - thanks for that one :)

Cheers,
Andrew
