New A2 Owner

Hi,
Just bought a A2 for a good price!
Impressed with the quality and design.............and did not realise an all aluminium body too!
It is a 1.4 SE Petrol in silver and dark grey interior, Reg Y811DHO, bought near Oxford, 123,000 miles.
I have a few things to sort out including a slight miss on idling (I will give Redex a try first), and back roller tray and wheel caps missing, and a panoramic roof which does not work, but I figured better to have a glass roof that does not work than none at all.
Maybe the roof is covered in a forum which I have not yet found, but there is no life in it when the switch is operated, and no noises. I was thinking I would be very lucky if it just the fuse, but I understand the roof fuse is combined with the horn but that is working ok.
Any ideas and help would be appreciated!................perhaps it is the motor?
Sorry if there are already Threads covering this!
Cheers,
Peter
Ps, I was scratching my head about how to place my first post on the site, but then discovered I needed to 'Post New Thread' so hope this is successful!

Hi Zarona and welcome to a great club and forum.

Open Sky problems are common especially when the OS is not used and not lubricated. It seizes up and was known to strip the teeth off the gears!

Up until a few years ago I recall Worthing Audi were doing repairs under warranty (up to 10 years old I recall) and then some people went to a garage in German for the warranty service.

I believe A2 Cars in Milton Keynes now offer a repair service but not free!

Loads of posts on the subject. I put "Open Sky repair" into the search box, Here are 3 of the longer threads I found:

can anybody repair open sky with the kit? http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthrea...en-sky-with-the-kit&highlight=open+sky+repair (31 pages)

An OpenSky is reborn! http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?10728-An-OpenSky-is-reborn!&highlight=open+sky+repair (34 pages)

Autohaus Rinner: OpenSky! http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?16487-Autohaus-Rinner-OpenSky!&highlight=open+sky+repair (47 pages)

Good luck and hope you have many enjoyable years with your new wheels.

Correct, but it happened the other way 'round. It was Rinner Audi in Germany who were first given the role of doing goodwill OpenSky replacements. Myself and a few others from the UK separately made the trip to Rinner, along with literally hundreds of other A2s from all across Europe. When I was there, twenty A2s or more must have been parked outside. All had OpenSky, though their registration plates were from far and wide. Dutch, Portuguese, Romanians, Danish...
Eventually, some pressure was exerted upon Audi to offer the replacement service in the UK. For one reason or another, Audi chose their Worthing dealership, and seemingly weren't too keen to begin with. Such tight restrictions on vehicle service history were imposed that getting them to agree to doing an OpenSky replacement was a challenge at best. Only when folk who'd been to Germany argued that the restrictions imposed at Worthing were not in line with Audi's goodwill policy elsewhere did the flow of A2s to the south coast really begin. I think the first goodwill OpenSky system replacement was in early 2010. Given that the service was open to all A2s under 10 years old, it was therefore open to nearly all A2s for a very short period. By the time news of the service spread in this community, early A2s had already missed the boat. My own was replaced in Germany in 2011, with only months to spare, and it must have been a couple of years until the service was really up and running in the UK. As such, for most UK owners, the ship had already sailed.

Sorry for the swerve. Hi Zarona and welcome to a the club. :)

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your welcome to the club, and I hope for some enjoyable years with my A2!
I had always liked the looks of the A2, but had no idea there was such a love and enthusiasm for them, and now it turns out a great owners club too!
And...............I cannot believe my luck in there being an independent A2 Specialist, A2 Cars in my town!!!.............I will have to visit them soon.
Many thanks for the OS links. I am away for about 2 weeks now, so will digest them on my return. From your knowledge is it usually more than just a motor problem that stops them working?...............and are all their mechanics accessed by removing the headlining panel?
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your welcome to the club, and some background on OS repairs.
Well my A2 is 2001, so well out of any guarantee! For now I will just think it is better to have an OS that does not work than no sunroof at all!
I was asking Alan if the OS problem is usually more than just the motor, and also is all the OS mechanics accessible just by removing the headlining panel?
Cheers,
Peter

Welcome to A2 ownership and the forum/club Peter.

I too am a resident of MK; I will look out for you.

I'm always happy to talk A2s etc..., so if I can be of help, please do let me know.

Cheers,

Darren

Hi Darren,
Thank you for your welcome and offer of help if needed..............and I am impressed by the friendliness of the club already!
And you are in MK too, I am in Downs Barn, and I clicked on My Location and see you are in Bletchley.
Alan told me about A2Cars specilalist in MK, which I did not know about, and I believe there is a member there too?
It is as if I was destined to buy an A2! My car if off the road at the moment as I need to check out a few things first, and on holiday for 2 weeks.
I am sure we will meet up some time soon!
Many thanks,
Peter

Hallo Peter and welcome.
You are very lucky to live in MK! If Heineken serviced A2s it would be at Tony's A2 cars. I travel from Manchester to get mine sorted by them and cannot recommend them highly enough.
Enjoy the A2, they are quite addictive.
Simon

Hi Peter. No I'm not an expert as I haven't got OS but just reading the posts on this forum give one a degree of insight.

I'm sure those with OS will help. After you've digested some of the older posts on OS it might be worth starting a new thread with the words OS and the specific query in the title so it's highlighted to catch the eye of those with more knowledge (or adding a post to one of those older threads).

PS Just spotted A2 Cars in MK have posted about their OS Refurbishment Service http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?27834-OSS-Refurbishment-Programme

I can't add anything to your Open Sky issues I'm afraid (other than the fact that Worthing Audi are my closest dealers ☺️), and I've only owned my A2 for 6 days, but welcome :)

My grandparents used to live in Downs Barn - I'm in Kingsmead though, not quite Bletchley.

A2Cars on the doorstep is an added bonus. Enjoy fettling during the next 2 weeks; I look forward to catching up in due course.

Darren

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for the A2OC welcome, one of many.
Like your photo image (called an avatar I think) too!:)
Cheers,

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your welcome, and I am impressed by the many so far.
I'm away for about 2 weeks, so will try to post photos after my return, my A2 being a standard 1.4 SE petrol as far as I know! I was thinking maybe I should go to a social meet soon, especially if there is one not far from MK?
I now know that Darren C and A2Cars are in MK, so hope to make contact with them soon too.
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Simon,
Thanks for your welcome also.
I moved to MK about a year ago and really like it as a place to live, and now after buying the A2 I find that MK is blessed with A2Cars which I am sure could be a great help to me!
From my short A2 ownership time I am sure I could be come addicted too like most of A2OC seem to be!
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Alan,
Thanks again for the suggestion. I will be away for about 2 weeks, but with laptop, so I hope to grab some time to read the various OS threads you mentioned.
I plan to visit A2Cars on my return so will find out more about OS problems/servicing!
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Darren,
Regrettable I will be away for 2 weeks so cannot work on the A2, but I will have my laptop so plan to do a lot of A2OC thread reading!
Maybe we can meet up sometime after my return, as I am sure if you cast your experienced eye over my A2 you could tell me a lot that I otherwise would not know!
Cheers,
Peter
