New A2

Hi all, just purchased a 54reg A2 1.6 FSI Sport. Really like the car but i'm just getting a bit worried after reading about all the faults that occur with the car. Are these faults pretty rare or quite common? A lot of the so called faults that people have mentioned like the car sounding like a diesel, and the tapping engine noise my car already has, hope I haven't bought a dud. It has 36500 on the clock and is due a service in 1500 miles. Hope somebody can put my mind at rest! Thanks.

Hi Kezbed,
I too have the 1,6 FSI Sport, a 52 registered one. I wouldn't worry about the rattles when starting the engine up, they all do it, the fuel is fed to the engine via a common rail pump which works under high pressure and the noise happens when the pump is being pressurised. The engine soon settles down and runs smoothly.

Things to watch out for are uneven tyre wear (anti roll bars often go as can tracking), wheels being buckled, look out for pot holes! Especially look out for the engine management light comming on - it could mean new coil packs (advanced spark plugs is a good description) but Audi have extended the warranty for these to 5 years so peace of mind there plus there are improved parts probably on your younger A2.

My car has experienced all of the above in a similar mileage. But it is a great little car to drive and touch wood I have had no problems recently. I think all cars have their glitches and the A2 is no different, but few are as much fun for the money.

Thanks!

Hi mark, thanks very much for your reply. When i bought the car it needed 2 new front tyres, they were pretty badly worn all over but more so on the inside of the tyre. So I will have to keep an eye on them.

Regarding the other fault you mentioned the coils, are you saying that the audi warranty should cover this? I still have 18 months warranty left on the car, what else is covered? I might get it serviced over the next few weeks.
I have been quoted £280 for the service, Does that sound a decent price?

Cheers, John.

Do as I did Kezbed, obtain quotes from other dealers in an hours travel and get them to price match! I made my dealer reduce from £270 to £229;)

Kezbed,
If you still have 18 months warranty on the car then you have no worries. it will a full all parts covered warranty from Audi as all new cars come with 3 years warranty so I am assuming that the car has 18 months of the 3 years left to run. Just enjoy the car. I had to extend my warranty last year and had nearly £800 worth of work done going to take out another warranty soon with CSMA called car care plan which should cover most things.

The coil packs have an extra 2 years warranty over and above the normal 3 year warranty. When launched the technology for the petrol engines was new - no spark plugs- direct ignition - and Audi (VW and other group companies as well) found that the original coil packs were not as reliable as hoped! My car was the Audi A2 show car from the 2002 British Motor Show at the NEC. The FSI concept was launched at that show so I have one of the earlier versions of this engine and it shows as I've had 7 coil packs replaced all under warranty. But there have been updated coil packs fitted for some time now and I understand that the back of the problem is sorted - fingers crossed as I had 4 new ones fitted last February. Its the cold weather when they go my dealer told me, heres hoping for an Indian summer!

Yes I've also been through some front tyres. Sometimes the outer parts wear through a more enthusiastic style of driving! But roll bars are known to be weak, the collars on mine are starting to crack. The handling will go woolly when it goes.

Clutch

Hi all, thanks very much for all your replies. One last question, has anyone had or heard of anyone having a problem with there clutch?
I may be being a bit paranoid but mine seems to be quite stiff and I can feel it clicking a bit as I change gear. I know it is probably nothing but just curious. Also does anyone know if this would be covered by the warranty?

Thanks, Kez.

I have just become a proud owner of a 2002 1.4 SE and I can't praise the car enough!!! Its simply ahead of its time. Its such a shame that audi have taken the decision to discontinue production. I only hope the 'new a2' is as good and well designed as this model. My only concern, after reading posts on this site, is I do not come across some of the 'problems' encountered by other members i.e suspension klunks and transmission noises!!
A2 is a classic.

I hope I haven't been stitched up my dealer for the last service - I was charged for 4 spark plugs!!
