New and looking for an A2 TDI - Sunny Cornwall! :)

Evening all! I've currently got a 2003 Audi A4 Tdi Avant, which I'm looking to sell in the next few weeks, to be replaced by a A2.
Basically my journeys are generally short (town driving) but frequent, and I need a smaller, cheaper to run car as my daily. This saving will also enable me to afford to put my weekend toy on the road - a mk2 Golf GTi with a 2.8VR6 conversion :)
Aaaanyway, I narrowed my search down to an A2 after hideous thoughts of Peugeots, and VW Polos. It eventually dawned on me (after copious amounts of googling), that the A2 1.4 TDI ticks pretty much every box for me; cheap road tax and insurance, great with diesel even in urban driving condition, and ultimately, it's still an Audi!! My only quibble is the shape; it's not quite as alpha-male as my A4 avant, my mk2 VR6 will solve that problem ;). Having said that, I reckon it's pretty quirky and would probably grow on me.
I don't know a huge amount about them, but have started to dig around the site for info. I'm looking to spend around £3.5k on one - any particular advice anyone can give me? Otherwise I'll keep on searching the site!
Cheers in advance!

Welcome indeed. Theres a fair selection on sale at the moment; more than the last couple of years anyway with over 200 on Autotrader ( 50 or so of these TDi)

Tips - read the sticky thread on the general forum ' buying and owning an A2'; plus the 'hints and tips' thread.

For a TDi; buy on overall condition and maintenance history over mileage and specification. TDi's are few and far between, so examples with optional kit are rarer still.

Take a look at the brochures section to swot up on what is standard and which items were cost options.

Try and find one thats been cherished by as few owners as possible and has lots of paperwork with it. Your budget will buy you an average mileage 2001/2 car or a high mileage 2003/4.

Be prepared to travel and move fairly quickly as nice competitively priced examples tend to sell fairly quickly.

me and my partner are chopping in our mk4 gt tdi for an A2, were in cornwall too, only deeper then you, going up tomorrow to hopefuly collect a 2005 (54 reg ?!?!?!) 1.4 tdi with 88k on the clock, one owner and just had the cam belt done..... its up for £3995. seems cheap compared to others we've been watching for a month or two now.

seems where we are you have to travel huh!

Wow, where did you find a 2005 A2 Tdi for that sort of money with 88k on the clock?! Most of the A2's I've seen advertised seem to have about 130k on the clock...
Would be interested to see photos of yours when you get it!

Meant to add to the thread the other day; I drove a friend's 2005 dolphin grey A2tdi the other day. He let me take it out and have a play to my heart's content. It's only got about 50k on the clock, and I'm pretty confident he paid a small fortune for it a couple of years ago. Apparently it's some sort of limited edition end of run model too?
Anyway, as soon as I drove it, I instantly liked the little thing, and drove it straight home for the fiancee to see. Even she liked it!
I'm still keen as mustard to buy one, but am concerned I can't seem to find anything with less than about 130k on the clock for much less than £4k. I'm still very much aware that I could buy a newer Polo tdi with similar miles for similar money. However, I would prefer an A2 overall, although I can see locating the right car for me isn't going to be a walk in the park...

It's just a matter of time. Wait long enough and the right car will turn up :) (you have to be prepared to travel though).

For the final period of the A2's production run, the only trim level available in the UK was 'Special Edition'. Prior to that, the A2 had been available in three trim levels; Base, SE and Sport. SE is not to be confused with Special Edition.
The Special Editions were essentially Base spec cars with added climate control and a CD player as standard. Beyond that, they have a tendancy to vary a little in their interior spec and appearance, as Audi were basically using up the parts they had left!

As Mike says, be prepared to travel for the right car. You'll have to cast your net nation wide if you're to find what you're looking for. Also, be aware that the car may have to be somewhat lacking in optional extras to fall into your price bracket given your desire for a lower mileage model.
I'm pleased that you're set on an A2. They are the best small car around! :)

Do you really need a tdi? I went to the lakes today and averaged over 50 mpg and get 45 on average. If your just making short journeys round town, will you really save enough in fuel to warrant the extra £2,000.

If on the other hand your leaving your lovely county for tours etc then it definitely makes sense.

Given the nature of your journeys, a 1.4 petrol may make more sense. Yes, the TDI is certainly more efficient once the engine is up to temperature, but around town it's not that much more frugal than the petrol. As Chris points out, a TDI of similar spec and mileage will set you back a lot more. That said, it'll hold its value better too, so your period of ownership probably also needs to be taken into account when thinking about the finances.

found it in auto trader bud.

there are a few around at that price, just stick in your search what you want.

we had a hard time as we wanted 3 seats in the rear, if you just want two it'll be easier....

good luck! i'll get pics up soon, when i'm aloud near it next lol

03(53) TDi, SE, Crystal Blue, 102k, £3400

Usually post these in the spotted forum; but as youre still looking the following maybe worth an enquiry.

To be honest its a lousy advert that says little about the car; nor do the photos - but there's a chance its a good one at a bargain price.

I trust 'excellent con' refers to the cars condition and not the intended terms of sale :p
