The battery was turning the engine over slower on cold mornings . I searched and found a post by Skipton on how to tell if a battery was the original one. I checked and mine had an 8Z part number and the car born 5/9/2001. ie the battery 11 years and 7 months old! It was still working fine but just a bit sluggish. One of the posts here recommended justcarbattries.co.uk and they had a Varta Silver F18 for £89.22 free next day delivery. With the help from Show-Man's photos on battery removal it was an easy job. If the new one does as well should be good till 2023!
