New brake pads AND disks!

Two days ago the orange symbol came up with a chime to tell me that my brake pads need replacing. Took car to Kwik-Fit today and a nice £186 later it now has a pair of new disks and brakes... BUT they had no idea how to reset the chime and symbol that STILL shows on the DIS! Grrr... And it chimes that lovely chime EVERYTIME you start the car now! And Docklands Audi's service dept was closed by the time I got there... At least there are brakes...

Hey Johann
Will be very interested to see how you get on
as i just had my MOT and they tell me my Discs are getting
low and could do with replacing i also have a 10% off card
as i have just changed my insurance to Kwik Fit .....

new brake pads

Wooly, try Elitedirect.com. They quoted a quarter the main dealers price for Peter's babe magnet (I blame it on the parents!)

Well my MOT is due the 14th of Dec and the powers that be inside the car reckons the next service is due in 2000 miles... so I may as well book it in for all of that AND reset the thing... MORE money to be spent... Oh well guess car is due a Xmas pressie too but at this rate it is getting the biggest present of anyone!!!

What a Farce!!!!

What a farce Audi is!!! Phoned Docklands Audi this morning (Where I bought the car) to book it in for the MOT and service.
“Anything else need looking at sir?”
“Yes, I want the ‘brake pad needs replacing’ light reset please.” I say.
“No, sorry we can’t do that at all”
“Excuse me? You can’t do it? Why?”
Mr Audi answers “Company policy. We can’t reset any warning lights for things we did not replace ourselves.”
“BUT you are doing an MOT as well as a service. Surely an MOT means you will check the brakes and everything and can thus give the car an all clear and also reset the warning light?”
“No, company policy…”
“So am I to drive with this warning light and the chime every time I start the car forever then?”
“Yes, until you need new brake pads – which you have to get done at the dealer”
“Fine, cancel the booking, I’ll go to an independent dealer” I not so politely told him…

Grrr…

NOW: where do I find a decent independent servicing place that has a VAG/Audi computer in East London?!!!

One better replace the pads before the light comes on. How much is left on the pads when the light comes on and does the rear brakes have a sensor as well?

The stealers will do all they can to keep us in their icy grip!!!

A bit like the news that BMW dealers will only take your car in part-ex if it has a full main dealer service record.... Now, what was that EC rule about us being able to have our cars serviced where we like without prejudicing the warranty etc.?

New brake pads

Johann, try Elite for pads etc, not sure about re-setting light though, Elitedirect.com. Very close to Docklands near Ford works, and very helpful people.

I have no connection with Elite other than as a very satisfied customer.

I found Lindvale VW dealers at Gallows Corner Romford helpful and cheaper than you know who, not too far from Docklands, especially if you are a crow.

Take a look at the VAG members of the Yahoo Groups VAG-COM group - there is bound to be someone near you who will do a light reset for the proce of a pint or two.

Hey Johann are u now sorted did you manage to get the warning light extinguished ............ Are the brakes working ok ............

Johann,
Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes? Worked on mine……

Thinking about it, I tried two things simultaneously

I disconnected the battery and then had a look at the connector going to the brake pads.
I had bent one of the pins in the connector, so I’m not sure if it was fixing the bent pin or the battery that did the trick.

They tried the battery trick, but only for 2 minutes!!! hehehe

It is going in to a VW Speacialist tomorrow. He said he can do everything, MOT, 80000 miles service and the light reset. So hopefully all sorted by tomorrow evening.

Talking of brakes, mine are now really noisy and squeaky, sound dreadful! Plenty left on the pads, but was thinking of upgrading the pads and discs to something whizzy, any suggestions?

Hi Fiona
I recently fitted Brembo Max grooved discs with standard Audi pads and i'm very pleased with the results. They don't look anything special but have certainly overcome the problem with the worn standard discs which seemed to lack bite, particularly in wet conditions. If the pads had not come up on e.bay I would have either gone for Pagid or EBC Greenstuf pads. The discs were on offer at German & Swedish - they don't list them for the A2 but they are the same as the 256 dia A3 and Golf parts. Second choice would have been ATE Powerdiscs - again grooved but with a more groovy pattern. Check them out and you'll see what I mean

Any news on the ABS sensor wire problem ?

Cheers Spike

Thanks Spike, I'll have a look later. My better half took his Allroad to AMD Technik at Bicester and he wasn't impressed. Booked it in for pads and discs, then when he got there they said, "oh, we haven't got those bits!", and they still tried to charge his the same for fitting the pads only!

With regard to the ABS sensor, after a week I called them and they said they were still looking into it! I mentioned that there were 2 parts for this, as you said, and they said, yup, you guessed, that they would look into it! They called back yesterday after 3 days and said, yes there are 2 parts and they would look into what they could do now!!!! To me it is a no brainer, they fit the new part to both sides, solve the problem for good and send me away a happy customer. Hey Ho

Turn off the warning light

Here in Sweden we have independent garages, they can reset warning lights etc.
I use a Bosch Car Service garage, they have nice Bosch computers (I think its the same as Audi use, but in other colour)

I think you can find Bosch Car Service in Uk and other countries.
