New Changes To MOT

Hi Folks,

Just had the A2 MOT'd, just needed a numberplate bulb. The guy that did the test said that if I take it back next year in the same condition, the car would FAIL..! Why? The EM light and the brake wear warning light are on, and thats a straight fail. It appears on the MOT Advisory list I got. Should have come into force in April this year, but they couldn't get it through Parliament in time.

Bus Pass Anyone..?

Very strange I know, but airbags are not currently part of the MOT in any way, shape or form.

However, stating the obvious....but, if you have an airbag warning lamp lit you maybe putting yourself or passengers at risk of death or serious injury if you don't rectify the issue.

Cheers

Yup, any light. ABS light is already on the list. Mine failed last year MOT, brake light switch.

There is a monthly magazine from the Transport Department I saw which gives updates to MOT requirements, maybe someone on the forum can get copies and keep us informed of changes..

The Tester took me under the car and showed me how to short the wires out to put the brake light out, (I already knew).

Next thing he reckons, is plugging the car into a scanner...!

Well.....I stand corrected.

I have just checked and the following now applies to warning lamps (from 1st April this year):

Warning lights
As well as electronic parking brake and electronic stability control warning lights (where fitted) the MOT test will also include checks for the correct function of the following, where fitted;
Headlight main beam warning light
Electronic power steering warning light
Brake fluid level warning light
Tyre pressure monitoring system warning light
Airbag warning light
Seat belt pre-tensioner warning light
Steering & suspension

it's an LED, not a bulb, and it's an 0603*, so if you're not extremely capable with a very small soldering iron, it's not going to happen. And I suspect it would break something else

(I understand there's humour involved, but still...)

*I think it's 0603, I'm pretty sure; but when the width gets to <2mm, I can't really easily measure any more

Wpaul,

The test includes a check on the bulbs operating correctly so they have to illuminate when the ignition is turned on then go out after a few seconds once the system checks are completed.

VOSA have recently announced a revision to the list of checks which concerns the Airbag system - the car will only fail if the airbag light is constantly on and does not need to light up when the ignition is turned on

Handy info.

Of course there was some homour involved beforehand, nevertheless I think because of all these changes, soon it will only make sense to buy either a new car or something that doesnt have all these computer aids that become a problem of its own.

The last Caterham I drove had engine cut switch and that's about it, didn't even have turn indicators... but those weren't meant for roads ;p

Desoldering the LED is a bit drastic isn't it? I would simply put some black electrician's tape over the offending LED to stop its illumination from being visible.
