New Emissions charge in London

Hi All,

I do not completely follow the technicalities of this thread, but my April 2001 A2 1.4 AUA engine has:-

Option Code 0GG = Emission Standard EU4.

Cheers,

Peter

Have pinged an email off to TFL. Let's see what they say.

I did that. I asked about my wife's TDI 90 and one of my 1.6 FSIs.

They responded quite wuickly to say that the TDI 90 is NOT subject to the surcharge.

They strangely said that they will respond about the FSI in a separate reply.

That was weeks ago and I am still waiting.

I guess that they are as confused as we are.

I hope they respond quickly and clearly to your email.

The more prople that ask TFL tge better.

Yes that is strange.

Well, I'm guessing due to it's year (2001) and AMF code it might not be Euro IV, but I'm wondering if it will all come down to what has been entered onto the national system rather than what the cars are actually classified as.

I heard something similar happened in Germany, whereby the wrong info was given to the TUV for some of the A2s and required correcting.

Just got the response from TfL.

Not Euro IV as I suspected. I only drive into London on weekends anyway, but good to know.

In 2001 Euro IV didn't exist. The mistake in Germany was made by Audi, not updating the CoC. Details in the link (post 22) in post 12. No 1.2Tdi's were ever tested to Euro IV but their Euro III emissions met the Euro IV standard. They therefore meet the German standard D4. For some reason all 3L(/100km) 1.2Tdi's (no options) are deemed D4 but 3.2L 1.2Tdi's (PAS and/or A/C) are only D3 when they should all be D4. TUV Bamberg recognise Audi's "mistake" and will give a green card but they are the exception!

Besides the three-litre version of the Audi A2, the 1.2 TDI, the A2 1.4 TDI* with 66 kW (90 bhp) and the powerful A2 1.6 FSI* with its direct petrol injection (81 kW/110 bhp, 202 km/h residual speed, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds) also comply with the Euro IV standard.

Hi,

Finally heard about the 1.6 FSI.

TFL have (not surprisingly) confirmed that my 1.6 FSI is NOT subject to the surcharge.

So that is a TDI 90 and FSI confirmed as ok (as long as they are post Jan 1st 2001)

Do we have any confirmed letter from TFL regarding the TDI 75 and the 1.4 petrol (again post Jan 2001)?

Steve B

My TDI 75 AMF was first used October 2001. It is subject to the additional charge. Confirmed.

So I would imagine that the same applies to all TDI 75s?

Perhaps that will increase the value of the TDI 90 for London A2 drivers?

I think just AMF engine code for TDI 75.

Bret's post here discusses it. http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthrea...rman-Environmental-Permit&p=101515#post101515

One thing I'm wondering, is if they didn't have Euro IV tests back in 2001, does the AMF TDI 75 meet the standard? Or is it assumed that because it was marked as Euro III that it can not perform any better?

The 1.2TDI exceeded Euro3 (obviously a different engine) but just wondering if the early AMF engines did too.

I've just had confirmation from A2-Freun.de that the AMF engine exhausts too much NOx gases for Euro4. The BHC is the upgraded Euro4 Version which has watercooled EGR and VTG turbocharger to meet the Euro4 standards.

Bit of luck then that mine is a BHC engine code. I didn't think the BHC has a VNT?? Can anyone confirm?

On the oemepc website, I then checked the ANY and AMF turbo's and according to the site, they are the same! They are definitely not the same. More checking on A2-Freun reveals that the BHC has the same turbo as the AMF but does have water-cooled EGR, unlike the AMF. Sorry to disappoint Steve!

According to here:

http://www.oemepc.com/audi/part_sin.../145/subcategory/145052/part_id/254122/lang/e

the BHC has the same turbo as the ATL (apart from the last letter). All the Euro 4 compliant A2 diesels had water-cooled EGR and VNT, including the 1.2.

Well you leatn something new every day :)

Hi folks,

There are some inaccuracies in the documentation which have led many to conclude that the BHC engine has a VNT turbo, but this is definitely not the case.

The 75bhp AMF engine is Euro3 compliant. The 75bhp BHC engine and the 90bhp ATL engine are both Euro4 compliant due to having watercooled EGR. However, of the 1.4-litre TDIs, only the ATL engine has a variable vane turbo. The BHC turbo is different from the AMF turbo due to having a different exhaust manifold, but it is most definitely a wastegate turbo. I know this simply from having done a lot of work on the 1.4 TDI but also because I have a BHC turbo sat in front of me. :)

Cheers,

Tom
