Chat New FSI Owner

Good evening all,

After an extensive search and many hours of reading as much information I could from the threads on this site, I have managed to secure a 1.6 FSI that was advertised not so long ago on a certain Tree website.

After contacting the seller and asking the relevant questions, receiving more pictures, videos and going through the history of the car, I went ahead and brought it.

After picking up the car and driving it home I can report it’s a cracker, it pulls well and goes through the gears nice and smoothly, the steering is okay at lower speed but tends to vibrate at speeds in excess of 70 mph, a Investigation is required I think.

The rear boot gas struts need replacing, the drivers door is catching on something and has that metal clunking sound as you open the door.

I have to work over the weekend so I will not be able to have a closer look until next week, it was very clean to begin with but I would like to have a real go at a spring clean.

Pictures to follow 1. When it’s light and 2. When I have cleaned it.

Regards

Jae.

Welcome Jae and congrats on buying what sounds like a great car. If the niggles you mention are all that’s wrong with it then you have done very, very well indeed - regardless of what you paid.

Check strap in the door will need replacing with a refurbished one - contact @depronman

Morning Jae,

Sounds like you’ve found a really nice FSI there, nice work.

Yes have this looked at soonest, could be as simple as wheel balancing but could also be work suspension items or more than likely one of the drive shafts.

The rear boot gas struts need replacing
Some members have chosen the increased lift in the Stabilus 8413HV struts but have a read around. Don’t go cheap though as you’ll end up replacing within a year.

the drivers door is catching on something and has that metal clunking sound as you open the door
No doubt the door check straps as Robin suggests above but could also be an issue with one of the hinges. Can you confirm that the metal clunking sound is coming from within the door and not from the door catching the wing. Best guess is the check strap though which ideally should be replaced by a refurbished item.

Kind regards,

Tom

Morning All,

The noise from the door is definitely coming from inside the door and not contacting the wing, I will add this to the list to be replaced.

I will read up on the replacement struts over the weekend thank you for the suggestion.

I was hoping it would be just the balancing issue, I had to pump up the tyres before I made the two and half hour journey home last night, the car drove in a straight line and under breaking it rode straight as well.

The rear interior light is not working I have replaced the bulbs but that hadn't done the trick. I have attached the image of the PCB for your expert advice, I can not see any dry joints then again I don't know what I am looking for, to be honest.

I would like to replace the interior bulbs with LEDs, anybody recommend the correct bulb type?

I can't wait for the weather to improve so I can give a good once-over.

Thanks again Guys and Girls

Sorry another question while I am here, the Rear lid trim panel is loose and has come away from the body, probably as people have tried to shut the boot and pulled too hard. The clips are there I can see them, but I don't want too much pressure on the trim pushing them back in and breaking them in the process.

Is there a way to get the Panel off to see if I need to replace some broken clips before I put the trim back on? I can see myself going in heavy-handed and start breaking clips in the process.

This one looks suspect to me, but I would just reflow all of them and be done with it.

Thanks, yes I will dig out the soldering iron and have a go.

That's the same one that was cracked through on two of my cars. Sufficed to warm that joint up until it flowed back together and the unit was fully functional once put back into the car. First DIY job I did in an A2, based on tutorials here. Very satisfying.

Regarding the read lid trim, I suspect that someone had to replace or access the locking mechanism in the past or had to replace the license plate light assembly which requires the removal of the trim. Haven't done it myself yet but there are guides in the forum discussing this, very likely you just need to replace broken clips.

Hi

As has been mentioned you do have a dry joint and would recommend you reflow all. Did mine recently and all good now. I would recommend you take a look at the door strap sooner rather than later as they can damage the door and front bass speaker as I found to my cost when I got mine

Best of luck

Justin

The rear interior light is driven from the front one. So fixing the front may fix the back as well, but I'd reflow the joints on the rear PCB too.
