I recently bought myself the new 2004 grill to fit to my 2001 A2. The fitting itself was a piece of cake and once I had re-attached the bonnet to my car, I had to make a minor adjustment to the catch on the flap so that it would close...

...However; surprise surprise, I now can't open the grill!

I'm guessing that the catch just needs to be adjusted slightly again however I have no idea how to get the flap open! Any ideas what I should do (without damaging the flap or having to go to a dealer!)?

Thanks,

Stuart.
P.S. Photo above also shows lower grill chrome surround trim - as suggested by Shezlee.

If you can get an assistant to pull the interior release as hard as they can, whilst you pull the flap down from the front it may just come.

I once had to do this on my own (for the same reason- Dohh !), and resorted to using some washing line to rig the interior release.

You may also be able to get a bit more release by pulling the cable sideways from behind the dash.

Good luck.

Thanks Dave.

Following your suggestion I used a string approach (see below!) to hold the lever open and then forced the flap open. I would have asked my wife, but I am 95% sure she would have laughed at me or told said told me that it served me right for trying modify my car!

This luckily caused no damage however I did this whole procedure three times and have not yet found a position for the catch that allows the flap to be opened with the lever without force.

I'm not really sure what to do next except to leave it and carry some string and a paint scraper with me at all times!

I just had a brainwave!

I unscrewed the catch from the old grill and replaced the catch on the new grill with it.
Guess what - it works absolutely perfectly now!

There must be a very slight difference in design that prevented the new one from working.
I'll amend the fitting guide on the club site to advise this if people have difficulties as I have had!

Looking good Stuart.
The new grille ties in the black slats underneath the numberplate nicely.

A great modification Stuart. Just think, with cruise control your feet are freed from the accelerator on motorways, and with steering wheel control your hands will be free for the serious business of getting the radio setup just right...

Now Stuart you just need to replace that hideously massive old wiper blade and the transformation is complete!!!

I can vouch for the performance of the floppy wiper. What a transformation. No more judder. It's such a smooth action too. Definitely worth modifying.
