New owner from Reading

Hi Tom,

By harness do you mean the wiring loom? Which?

If so, look at our A2 parts bible (bookmak/add to favorites) to find the part number is a start, report back.

Andy
Yea the wiring loom which runs from the sensor at hub and terminates at the ECU. Well this is what I'm led to believe at least from numerous post on here.

The part number for the loom I have is 8Z0927904E.

Hi Tom Again,

It seems you have the repair loom for the front left wheel hub. I should be able help, I know this well, I am confident I can answer any questions you have.

Sorry but some questions.

1. The loom you have has 4 wires, about half is enclosed with a tough "overcoat", a black and brown twisted pair, a red and a yellow and all but the yellow has a connector pin with two connectors at the other end, correct? A picture would be good.

2. Would you prefer to do the work yourself?

3. Can you expand on the missing loom, I find it difficult to believe it has all been removed.

None of the wires go to the ECU.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the reply and no problems on the questions.

1) you have this spot on the yellow is the only unterminated wire the remainder have the pins fitted. Unfortunately the harness is in the car which isn't at home with me but I will pop by and grab this if the picture will help.

2) I'm fairly confident doing most work myself but also like to ensure its done correctly. Ideally myself to keep the cost down but i have learnt some jobs are best left to those with the right tools and since leaving the trade I've lost access to a fair few.

3) i was told it was removed to the source as it was used to fix the previous owners other A2 when they couldn't get hold of the part urgently enough. However I am yet to inspect the ECU harness and pins, I can confirm that from the sensor to the section of wire which heads up to the bulkhead I have found no points which look to be cut. I will try to get some pictures of all of this tomorrow afternoon.

Thank you

Hi Tom,

Any news if you have confirmed my loom description matches what you have or a picture?

Yes sorry the snow delayed me a little but I did manage to get down there today. Here are a couple of pictures of the loom and the ends.

Hi Tom(@Tom_89) Again,

Thanks, your loom is as I expected, the n/s ABS/PadWear repair loom.

It's late, full reply tomorrow (hopefully) but as I said none of those wires go to the ECU.

Andy

Understood and yes I've read very conflicting information but noticed the workshop instructions advise the abs connections (black and brown I believe) at the abs unit by the headlight rather than the ECU and a possible brake pad earth (yellow) elsewhere and the brake pad live (red). I paid for Erwin this evening to try and get this information but ran out of time.

Thank you as and when suits you will be great I'm going to pop back to the car in the morning and have a look in person. With the new information to hand.

I'm at the car at present and removed the harness connector but it seems the pinout is different to the layout I have located. I am just doing some reading now but thought it may help to share the picture with you here.

Good Afternoon Tom,

I now have a few minutes to help you. Might be worth reading my thread of last summer here..

Meanwhile I will try and find which pin numbers on that ABS controller connector you should be focussing on. I had the old wires in situ and knew which they were by tracing them and was not therefore concerned about pin numbers. I do remember they are at one end near where you are holding it.

No problem and honestly as and when suits and I'm still doing some reading now. Thank you that's a great help. They were listed as pins 1 and 2 in my diagram but this is very different and had the large pins grouped together at one end of the connector.

First two provisos. My experience is from a 02 plate FSI and I see your A2 is a 02 plate TDI, but I expect that will not make any difference with this loom but this is an assumption. Second I have a MK60 ABS controller is yours the same? If yours is the earlier MK20 then that may well generate differences on the pin numbers of the controller.

A picture of the other side of this connector with the cap removed and with luck the camera may pick up the embossed pin numbers may be a way forward. I see your quandary about the pins, yes the workshop guide has pin 1 & 2 but a wiring diagram I was looking at has pins 45 & 46, but I am fairly sure mine used pins 1 & 2. In your picture those two empty pin slots at the top of the main batch maybe 1 & 2 and this would match the removal of the old loom to source reported by the previous owner. Need to turn the connector over.

Still on removed to source have you inspected the A-pillar red connector?

Is the wiring in the engine compartment from the ABS/Pad wear grommet hole on the wheel arch 'upstream' to the big grommet into the cabin wrapped? If it is I would unwrap it, (you need to do this anyway to incorporate the new loom if you are matching factory), and an inspection may reveal the old cut loom.

Andy

I think its the same as the Mk4 polo system, the connector certainly looks the same:

Ive been out trimming the harness away and seem to of located a cut wire consisting of 4 smaller wires matching the new loom I am however a little reluctant to try and patch in here. But it seems getting the red wire to the a pillars may require heavy interior removal.

I did manage to take some pictures of the opposite side just incase, I have attached them below. To be honest I probably need to take a few that are a little clearer and split the wires up a little.

Tom,
I’ve just emailed you the proper wiring diagram this time.
Good luck,
Matt

Thanks thats a great help. I'll get there I'll be back there tomorrow morning to do the brake shoes but will make some time to investigate this further while on site. I need to torque everything up at the front end anyway so the from left wheel will be off for the final time possibly.

Tom,
I’ve just emailed you the proper wiring diagram this time.
Good luck,

Evening Tom,

A result then, game over, simple patch and sorted but unfortunately you do no say where "here" is? It always seemed extreme that the previous owner stripped out the old loom to source.

Out of interest, my (not 100%) memory is the black and brown ABS wires are these two, you can always check with a meter.

Thank you Andy,

I will get back to the harness tomorrow and take a couple photos, it was tucked further up in the loom that heads from the front chassis rail up the bulkhead. I've been a little busy as there have been quite a few other jobs I've been completing while researching this and decided to be sure of everything before attacking the abs again.

Thank you so much once again.
