New owner with jobs to do..

Thanks everyone for all your advice, time and thoughts... I'll post more pics as things become more clearer... This group isgreat and your encouragement and advice has been a breath of fresh air in this far too cynical world... Thanks again to all concerned... Tony...

Keep at it when you have time, as several of us do not think it has a head gasket issue. You may well end up with a very nice little car for the price of time invested in it.

Any update?
Hi again,
Sorry for the late reply but have been working away recently...
It seems like things seem a lot clearer now and have come to the conclusion that the previous owner has dumped either engine oil in the water header tank as the car runs up to temperature absolutely fine and i can't find any kind of oil leak at all..
I've flushed and blown out the complete system and every hose i can possibly get to,to disconnect countless times now and the cooling system runs much clearer now than it did.. I'm not saying its perfect by any means as there's still the odd oil spot floating in the bucket when flushed but I'm confident enough to change the radiator for a second hand unit firstly (even if its just for a couple of months before replacing with a new one).
I don't really fancy changing the heater matrix unless I have to but i'll see how it goes...
I've still plenty of things to do yet as i know there's definitely suspension bushes and drop links to change (maybe even top mounts too)
Thanks for the support and info and will post some pics once its front end is back together... Tony...

Glad things are a lot better with the flushing.. Why are you changing the radiator? Is the car on the road yet? I would use it with correct coolant for a couple of weeks as is then reassess it after that. If still a little oily use a commercial radiator flush for aluminium and again replace the coolant afterwards. If it was accidental or deliberate oil in the expansion tank that should get the last of it out. In the warmer temperatures obviously the Webassto does not fire up but the coolant still flows through it the same way the coolant flows through the heater matrix. When you have time keep us updated as lots of members are watching this and hoping for this "cheap" remedy to clear the problem.

Thanks for the reply and I'll do as you say as i will get a cooling flush and try that and see if any remnants of oil show themselves..
I haven't insured the car as yet and just have it on the drive/garage but will look through the suspension first and then insure it as it's not due an MOT until August...
Can't believe the interest and to say this post started as just an introduction...
What a friendly group and I've certainly got the A2 bug... Thanks again...

I just realised that you are in Cambridge - I use VAS Autos in Norwich. Mark is great and now very experienced in FSIs having sorted mine.
