New personal best MPG.

Yup! And now I've got DIS installed I can be even more obsessional about it now, he he he!

Jeez I really must get mine out of town more!

More than half of our journeys are 1st/2nd/3rd gear only but even then, minimum MPG is 45. And when we do get out of town I feel the need for an Italian tune up to clear out the pipes. So never really get over 50!

I just know that if I held back to 70 on the motorways things would be different.

I gave mine a bit of a push on the motorway today to clear out the pipes ... 3500rpm in 4th, didn't see any black smoke in the mirror at all which surprised me, given the low rpm in the last few tanks. My old passat would have laid down a smoke cloud if I'd left it this long.

How long did you drive it for like that, Mike...?

About 20-30 seconds I think, it needs to be on full throttle, ideally up a big hill. And only once the engine is up to temperature, of course.

Ta, I'll have a go at that and keep an eye on the rear-view mirror.

Tom

When I was at Audi's-in-the-park, I found out from Robin why my Passat attracted soot while my A2 doesn't ... it's the turbo. My 75 has a simple turbo, but the Passat had a variable vane turbo (like the 90). The VVT can get sooted up quite easily unlike the simpler one. So it's probably not worth bothering with the italian tune unless you've got a 90.

I can't see myself beating this figure without adding the final aero mods. The only way I'm going to get better economy figures is to either slow down, or change my 17" 7J alloys.

Well, famous last words. I've just smashed my personal best over a full tank. This time I managed 76.9mpg... and I'm still on 17" wheels without the aero mods!
Despite having previously claimed that I'd not beat my previous best of 72.1, I found that one of my rear drums was binding. I renewed all the drum internals some months back but hadn't had the chance to test things on a run, until this week gone. As usual, cruise was set to a true 60mph.

A chuffed Tom.

Excellent, that's a superb score for an A2 without any mpg mods. I suspect that a lot of our cars have binding drum brakes, every one of my VAG group cars has suffered from this problem at one time or another.

Well, I've got the floppy wiper, the front wheel arch spoilers (though not the sub-frame spoiler and the tunnel cover), longer 5th, a remap and large-circumference, LRR tyres, so I'm not exactly without eco-mods.
However, the tyres are 205-width, running at 32psi on 17" wheels. I was running with climate control on, though the aircon wasn't having to work. I also have a heavy A2 due to having a lot of the weightier options. All things considered, I'm very pleased with my latest high score!

I was in your area last week, Mike, with a few hours to spare. I cursed at not having your mobile number, as I'd love to have a demo of your 6th gear; it'd see me break the 80mpg barrier, I'm sure.

Cheers,

Tom
