New TDi owner checking in

I registered on here back in 2012 and it's taken me until now to buy an A2. They don't call me Speedie for nothing.

Picked up this one last night from South Wales, drove it back down the M4 to West Oxfordshire grinning like a loon:

I'd looked at a few but could never find one that I could afford in the condition I wanted. This one has 111k on the clock and going very well indeed. It's replacing a Seat Arosa TDi (same engine) that slowly lost gears, one at a time, leaving me with 1st, 2nd and 5th. Entertaining but not much use. So time to flog the Seat and enjoy the A2.

I'll need to fix the speedo (packed up this morning) and get a second key, but everything seems to be OK apart from that.

My apologies in advance for probably posting irritating, newbie questions for the next couple of months!

Hi MMC, and welcome......

As you've already been lurking on here for a while you'll know very few questions are likely to cause irritation - so fire away!

Cheers

Jeff

Thanks Jeff - it's much appreciated!

I'll start with the speedo then... All working fine on the drive home, but when I set off this morning the needle just didn't move. It seems to work intermittently with a sort of desultory stab towards 20mph, but then dies again. Seems to work for about 45 secs when the car is cold and hasn't moved for a while, then dies again.

From looking around on here that sounds like a gearbox speed sender issue. Does that sound right? Easy job to change? I'm used to working on the mechanicals of rather more primitive stuff like this:

Thanks Jeff - appreciate the welcome!

Here's a starter for 10...

Driving home from Wales, the speedo was fine. Drive to work on Friday morning and it's packed up. There's a tiny bit of movement when I turn the engine on, but nothing more. It gives a sort of desultory flicker every now and then, but not much more - and it's even stopped doing that today.

From a look around here, I'm thinking gearbox speed sender. Does that sound right? And, if it is, how easy is it to change? Quite happy working on motorcycles and cars as long as there's minimal electrickery involved :D

Welcome to A2OC,nice looking A2 hope you find the answer soon to your problem with speedo, some one will reply soon.

Worth checking that it is not a loose loom connector on the instrument cluster.

A GENTLYish tap of the cluster while moving (carefully) and if it makes no difference then you are probably right about the speed sensor, but a faulty speed sensor is likely to throw up a few warnings and errors on the display because it is (I think) part of the ABS system? I may be wrong.

Steve - thanks for that. Tried giving the cluster a tap but no joy - nothing happens. And Urban, any idea which fuse is likely to be the problem? And thanks for the welcome, Colin!

VCDS can run an analog test on the cluster, so you can determine if the problem is a faulty clock or sender.

I'm sure your famiiliar with the term "VCDS", so I'd try and get a scan done as well as a test of the analog controls - you'll then be in a better place to work out what needs to be replaced or repaired.

If it is the clock motor, it can be replaced without having to purchase a new cluster.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Jeff, it helps a lot - thank you. I'll get Vicks in Burford to take a look - they've got VCDS. Very much appreciated. Might be worth it in any case, just to get any other faults found and sorted. Cheers! :D

Right - Vicks, as ever, sorted the whole thing. Top chaps. It was the gearbox speed sender. Completely dodoed.
