I recently acquired a BBY 1.4 2005, and coming from a long term tdi I noticed some stark differences, but overall impressed.
It's very smooth on idle, very smooth gearbox too.

I drove it averaging 70mph for 3 hours of the m4, and got 46.9 mpg, is that about right?

On cold start there's a little bit of petrol smell on choke, is that also normal?

I'll do an oil and filter service, any recommended tips for oil and kit maintenance?

As I said, I'm diesel all the way normally, been ages since I had a petrol!!

Thanks.

Hi
I’d say fuel consumption is in the right ball park for the time of year. I could get into the low to mid 50s last Summer not going over 60mph

Can recommend Bosch oil and fuel filters and on last change I used Millers for oil 5w-30

best wishes

Sounds like you've got a healthy one. Bit of a petrol smell on cold start not entirely unexpected, although on our mistreated AUA it was a really good strong petrol smell with a hunty idle for a while until I got a lot of parts replaced and mixture / misfire issues resolved (as described in many other threads).

Yes I recommend taking the throttle body off and cleaning it as well as the EGR port below it, as barely anyone does it. Your fuel consumption sounds right. My car (04, 240tkm) also smells a bit of fuel when starting cold. In my experience that is common for any older car, but not sure if it is ever supposed to be like that. Personally I am not too worried about it as it clears up quickly.

In terms of changing the oil, I am a big proponent of using one of those filter cups. It should be 74 mm diameter, 14 sided. I have the Bahco BE6307614F myself.
