New tyre guidance please

I've actually just ordered a couple of tyres from Tyreleader - motorcycle ones though. Being delivered to a fitting station that have a good local reputation, so I'm hoping to be able to report back good things.

I have used Kumho tyres on my wife's Tdi75 for the past 16 years and 140,000 miles. they are reasonably priced, wear very well, quiet and grip as well as the Michelin tyres they replaced.
I have no reason to change from that brand which I usually purchase from Black Circles.

Nope - I've been running 195/55 R16 for a few years now and they're great. Since December 2011 to be precise - just looked up the invoice to find that they're 6 years old, so have lasted pretty well too.

Hey Mike, glad that you posted up your tyres! I have decided to go for the Uniroyal rainsport 3 195/55/16 as you have recommended. Going to get them fitted tomorrow. I was initially worried that they won't fit - as I hear some posts that they might rub? Can you confirm that is is not the case? Cheers.

There is no substitute for first hand experience from a very seasoned A2 expert. It is so good to have such confirmation such as Mike's if you are wanting to try something like this and are unsure.

This size of tyre is about as large a diameter as you would want to run, with no fear of rubbing, as Mike has proved.

They are around 3.5% taller than the standard tyre and that is not overly excessive.
They even come with a bonus; your Speedo will become more accurate !!!!!
The standard speedo and tyre combination deliberately read slightly slower that actual MPH, by design. The taller tyres of this size actually remove that inaccuracy and so your speedo should read more accurately.

Cheers Mike

Indeed! I really appreciate the years of support what Mike (and you too Steve) have provided towards this forum! It's an amazing place to find the wealth of information and good people to share a common interest! Cheers again :)

Guys - I just want to report back how great these new Uniroyal RainSport 3 tyres are! Really has transformed how the car handles on the road - with no apparent impact on mpg (getting the same as before with the MArshall MH11 185/50/16).

Would anyone care to comment on what tyre pressure (PSI) these should be inflated to? At the moment I'm running 34 (front) and 33 (back). Cheers.

I’d get them up to 36-38psi and you’ll get even more economy from them. 33-34 is a little on the low side in my experience.

Hi folks - Happy New Year to you all!

I need some advise on 4 brand new tyres I wish to change this week. I'm only after mid-range for commuting so I'm not prepared to go all out on higher priced make. Currently I have Marshal Mtrac MH11's (on OEM SE 16" rims) and I like the fuel consumption (no so much grip). Been with these make for quite a while now ( 2x Audi A2 TDIs) and I would like to change to something a bit more grippy, but without impacting on fuel consumption. I'm looking at the Rotalla RH01 which the EU rating is the same as the current Marshal brand.

My question is would anyone recommend that I go for 195/50/16 or stick with the same 185/50/16 profile? Any advantages/disadvantages of changing?

Your thoughts and experiences are greatly appreciated!

Cheers.
I use 195/50/16 on mine changed from 185/50/16 better MPG

The Uniroyal RS3 195/55/16s are £50.50 on Camskill today (before delivery) - been watching them for the best part of a month and it's the first time I've seen them less than £53 or thereabouts.

I have used the tyre size comparison tool which (I think it was) @Birchall used to mention: https://tiresize.com/comparison/
51069

The height difference between the standard 185/50 16 and 195/55 16 using this tool is reported to be +4.7%

I don't know how this relates to the speedometer reading.

... the reason for my interest in this topic is I am keen to fit Michelin CrossClimate tyres (or similar) to my original "5-stern" 16" alloys (6J X 16 H2 ET35). I am keen to keep the car on the wheels it was supplied with. (photo is stock; not my car)

I will no longer have space to store a set of winter wheels hence my interest in all season; I think the Michelin CrossClimate+ will be the better all season for my range of motoring.

In 16" Michelin the current CrossClimate+ is available in: 195/55 R16 91H and 195/55 R16 91V

Hi Andrew,

I am not sure if you are asking a question, but some comments anyway.

Odd but the Visualiser in your post of the tyre comparision website is wrong and seems to be not working with both tyre sizes the same. I have tried it and it worked for me with the 4.7% increase visually showing.

I do notice that your selection of 195/55/16 is not listed in the first post of the definitive wheel thread, but I assume you have done your homework to establish it will fit without rubbing, maybe it is discussed in later posts or elsewhere, but it is 1.1" larger diameter than standard.

I am puzzled about your comment "I don't know how this relates to speedometer reading". The figures are all there and the way I read it, your speedometer will understate your actual speed, for example with the speedometer showing 70mph your actual speed will be 73.3mph.

I've just replaced a set of 195/55 16 Rockstone that I had fitted when I bought my 75 Tdi five years ago. They didn't cause any rubbing on standard SE suspension and the speedo was absolutely accurate when compared to my sat nav's speed read out. I also wanted all season tyres and bought four Maxxis AS2 in 185/50 16 for £218, from tyre guru online, delivered to a local tyre shop for fitting at £15 a corner (Inc new valves and balancing). The car's handling is much better on the lower profile and wet grip is excellent. They appear to compare well with the Michelin Cross Climate and Maxxis is a well regarded brand amongst 4 X 4 drivers.

@Andrew I wonder if you have read the posts earlier in this thread? My comments relate to @Skipton01 saying he has run 195/55 R16 since 2011; and @Birchall saying that the extra height of 195/55 R16 will make the A2 speedo read more “true” (as on standard tyres, eg 185/50 R16, the speedo reads low.
