New tyre guidance please

I understand - I've got an E-tron and 2 motorcycles to cater for too, but I can't justify spending a bit less on what keeps you on the road. The tyres on my road bicycle are £50 each and they're only 28mm wide!! The average 'top notch' tyre for the A2 is around the £100-110 mark now, cheap stuff, bargain basement, or tyres that people just pop on to sell a car with are around £35-45, so to me, middle of the road prices are around £65-75.

And if economy is your bag, I presume you're into hypermiling techniques? Use them and you'll get brilliant mileage out of even the worst rated tyres. Or just empty your boot of rubbish to make savings in economy!

I had some Chinese rubbish on the A2 when we bought it, I binned them and bought a set of Toyo Proxes as the wheels were being refurbished at Lepsons and they did the tyres for £68 each fitte (205/40/17), and I like the tread pattern. I had the same tyres on my MK2 golf GTi 16v a few years ago and thought they were good. I can’t really say how good they are on the A2 as it’s only done a couple of hundred miles since.

Ah - my bad! Delivered is £58.90. But £72.10 for fitting! wow - that's a big mark-up! So what's the average that a garage will charge for fitting and disposing per side?

Most of the tyre places I have been too quote in the region of £12.50 for fitting, but it can vary and should include balancing (some use nitrogen to inflate the tyre rather than air and that adds a small expense)

I've got Marshall Matrac XM (185/50 R16) on my TDI. I've never had other tyres so I can't really compare them to anything else, but they grip well and I'm getting 70+ mpg.

Has anyone tried 175 55 16 tyres ? (eg mytyres Yokohama Advan Neova at £86)
They are a rare size; I only seen reference to Lotus hence W speed rating with a 80 load rating which is ok if you do not load up too much- I think that may make them more comfortable with high performance at least on dry. I would be very tempted if I thought they would last as long as the usuall medium/premium makes.

I would not be too critical of a tyre because of its eu labels. I noticed they are not that consistent with the moulded-on-tyre markings and test/review reports.

Kwik Fit have 25% off Continental tyres until the end of Jan-2018.

I asked about Conti Eco Contact 5 in 185/50 R16 and Conti Premium Contact 2 in 185/50 R16; both are £96 fitted ... so no better than some of the online services, but an alternative way of getting that deal

Hmmm, I've always seen good prices on Tyreleader, but have never used them to buy from. Looking at their contact info, they're based in Andorra - wonder if it's for tax reasons? It'd be surprising if they supplied not the real thing, but I suppose it could happen? What exactly is a demo tyre? Is it a part worn from a road test or something??

i would have thought 195-55-16 was a bit large for the A2
195-50-16 would be better
look at the tyre thread PaulA2 has put on above 195-55-16 is not mentioned i think its too tall
go to oponeo.co.uk

Nope - I've been running 195/55 R16 for a few years now and they're great. Since December 2011 to be precise - just looked up the invoice to find that they're 6 years old, so have lasted pretty well too.

tyleader's DEMO "Tyre has been mounted and dismounted, and may have been used on a few kilometres. This tyre is guaranteed and new."

I think I will stay away from them. I don't understand why a company would have numbers of these, and when that company is based in Andorra, any warranty claim may be difficult to exercise... not that I have ever made a warranty claim against a tyre seller

Hmmm, a tyre that's been mounted and used for a few km may be guaranteed, but it's certainly not new. I'm struggling to think of a scenario where there'd be stocks of tyres such as these.
