new tyre - initial report

Hi folks,

Just thought this may be useful for anyone needing tyres?

I've just had a set of Goodyear F1- D3's

They have a great looking tread.
I have 205/45/16, which offers great rim protection also.

On intial driving they seem quieter than my old Dunlop SP9000's.

I paid £85 each balanced/fitted.

Tyre wear will be better according to the tyre man, we'll have to see, I have 50k out of my 1st set of duny's but only 39k from the second set... he says... ONLY!

I have an 18month old 1.6 fsi sport with 10k on it - just had to replace the the pirelli 205/40/17's as they were barely legal, we've already had to have the wheels fettled after 4 or 5 arguments with curbs, none of these problems occured when we had an SE, all because my wife liked the look of the alloys !!!!.... live and learn.

by the way we have had AVON tyres fitted - after ringing round these were said to have a more pronounced side protection, only time will tell !!

I've had my A2 Colour Storm for 3 weeks now - absolutely brilliant car. However, although those 17" alloys may look the nuts, they are prone to even the slightest run in with the kerb (as the delivery man from Audi discovered).

So, after several days agonising over the A2OC forum archives and Audi agreeing to refurb the wheels I've decided to part with £300 for a complete set of Falken Ziex 512's, 215/45/17 to replace my Pirelli / Kumho 205/40/17 mix.

So far I'm impressed. The rim protection offered is much better, albeit just 7mm proud of the rim; they grip very well in both wet and dry; are noticeably quieter and as for comfort are loads better.

I was concerned about up-sizing but have had recommendations to do so by several independent tyre specialists. All agreed that in doing so would further increase rim protection and improve the ride - without presenting any compatability problems. There isn't any rubbing on the arches and I had four adults and shopping in the A2 at the weekend - no problem.

I was also told that a bigger tyre would affect the speedo reading - this has not been the case.
I measured 71mph in fifth gear at 2600rpm on the original size tyres and get exactly the same reading with my new Falkens?!?!

I considered the Avons, but were told they weren't that good although they do have the biggest sidewall protection; Toyo Proxes seemed to read up well but didn't seem to offer great longevity from what I've read about them; and the Bridgestone's were too expensive for me - particularly as I didn't really need new tyres in the first place.

Well, that's 1/2 hour of work time wasted on talking about tyres............I must get out more often!

Eeeboy.

i have mitchelins but they are for heay weight

I have some michelin pilot sport but heavy load versions?
the last pilot sports were good for about 40,000
I have now idea what these ones are they seem ok, hope they will last along time as there's not much weight on them!:D

Tyres

As a new member where do you begin...

First and foremost hi to you all!

Secondly I must mention the A2 I have - its a 1.6fsi sport with most of the extras, the open sky was my first priority!

I have since given this to my wife (katie) to drive since acquiring a A3 sportback. But miss the a2 soo much I tell the wife "can i use your car this morning"!

I shall need to replace the tyres soon and was considering an increase to the 205/40/17 tyres mainly for more comfort (and to reduce the damage katie is doing to the alloys!) they are 17" on pirelli nero's

thats it for now - but would welcome feedback on the site

:) :)
